Nina Caprez célèbre les 25 ans de l’ascension du Nose en libre – Nina Caprez celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Nose free ascent

  • 12/11/2018

A great adventure is just ending in Yosemite ! As celebration for the 25th birthday of the Nose free ascent in Yosemite by Lynn Hill, Nina Caprez decided to try the challenge, joined by Lynn herself and almost freed the route ! During a month, Lynn and Nina were trying « El Nose » in El Cap , and Nina took profit of Lynn’s experience and memory. This historical bigwall of thousand meters (30 pitches !) has been climbed in aid climbing for the first time in 1958 by Harding, Merry and Whitmore after 47 days in the wall ! Then we need to wait 1993 for the first free ascent in 4 days by Lynn, a real feat ! A year after, she returned in the route for a less than 24 hours free ascent. Impressive. It was just the second route to be freed in El Cap after « Salathé » by Skinner and Piana in 1988. Becoming famous for the aid climbing speed record, the route has received few free repeats : Scott Burk in 1998 (with « the great roof » top rope), Tommy Caldwell and Beth Rodden in 2005 (reversible), Jorg Verhoven in 2014 (3 days), Tommy Caldwell another time in less than 12 hours in 2015 and the japonese Keita Kurakami in 2016 have succeed.
The first crux pitch « The Great roof » and his famous underclinging crack under the roof (L21, 8a+) didn’t cause too much problems to Nina ? But the second crux pitch « Changing corners » (L26, 8b+) very technical, with the arete to a desperate dihedral was challenging. After a month of work and a push together, it missed to Nina only 4 meters of this pitch to free. Here is her talk about this nice adventure
