Nina Caprez renoue avec l’escalade sportive en Grèce – Nina Caprez back to sportclimbing in Greece

  • 09/04/2018

Nina Caprez has just returned from a 5-week trip to Greece. The main program: a come-back in sport climbing game by discovering new pearls of Leonidio and Kyparissi, as well as an astonishing marble cliff near Athens. Following the calm rhythm of the local life, the Swiss returned with joys to the high performance in sport climbing.

– Fanatic Climbing : What were your favorite crags, sectors and routes on this trip?
– Nina: Clearly Kyparissi, because the site is simply amazing, like nothing else. The small hidden fishermen village is simply dreaming, there is butcher shop in the village, one can have bbq on the beach and sleep there. And ALL the routes are beautiful with a 3D climbing on these huge, tufas.
In Leonidio, what I liked the most was the diversity of styles. My favorite was Hada sector, with the mixture of crimps, slopers and some tufas like in Saint-léger. I helped to bolt a route in this area, a big 8b called “The Swan”. This 40m line is a great trip!
I also climbed durinf one day in Athens: on a crag which is on a beautiful hill in a town called Spilia Daveli. It was pretty cool!
Finally, the area Elona in Leonidio is beautiful too, I loved it very much, and it was also here that I could have done the King Line “Goliath”: a 60m long 8b and an 8c called “Hanuman”

– Fanatic Climbing : How many hard routes in the 8th degree did you climb?
– Nina: I counted the 8b’s and I made 9 of them in total. Each of them took me one day max, except “Goliath”, which cost me too much in my onsight try (where I fell 1m under the anchor). I sent it the next day .. And then this 8c, that I invested myself into for 2 days. However, it was a big fight to sent it,I was really mentally stong that day!
I did not count all the 8a’s and 8a+’s, because, to be honest, I did several of them each day and I tried everything onsight.

– Fanatic Climbing : You did a lot of onsights, why and what do you get from it?
– Nina: Onsighting is really good there, because here the observation is not very difficult and once you understand the style, you can ride pretty well turning the knees in every sense. It was really a great opportunity for me to go to a place, where I had hundreds of new routes.

– Fanatic Climbing : You climbed “Hanuman” 8c in the Elona sector; 3 years after your last 8c, did you feel again the need to turn to the high difficulty?
– Nina: Before leaving I really wanted to try again a hard route, which was a bit difficult at first, because we had a good week of rain, so the choice was limited. So I climbed thoroughly onsight and, at the end of the stay, when everything dried up, I was in shape and I had what to choose from! 😉
Like every winter, my unconsciousness tells me what he wants to do this year. And for 2018, he clearly decided that it is going to be a great year of climbing. So I opened up the opportunities this winter and I still spent two months to train in the gym, which has not happened for many years.
Sending “Hanuman” was important to me. I set myself free and I just loved the feeling that I could do the hard movements, while being relaxed and with the famous phrase in the head: climbing is just a game!

– Fanatic Climbing : What are your plans for this spring and the summer season?
– Nina: The project of the year is to return to the “Nose” with Lynn Hill this fall, to try the free climb. She will celebrate her 25 years since the first ascent and to celebrate this, she will tell me some tricks !
Otherwise, I’ll just climb thoroughly and do hard routes. Summer in Chamonix, to feast on the granite and for the rest, just in the flow …
