La deuxième saison aura été la bonne : la Coréenne Chaehyun Seo empoche enfin « Papichulo », la King Line en 9a+ d’Oliana (Catalogne) ouverte par Chris Sharma en2009, après un voyage infructueux en 2024. Enfin, elle avait quand même fait « Fish-eye », 8c, à-vue le dernier jour, donc disons que tout le monde n’a pas la même définition de l’échec.
Comme à chaque fin de saison de compétition, les corps et têtes fatigués des durs-à-cuire de l’IFSC vont se ressourcer sur le caillou. Et on l’a déjà vu ces dernières semaines avec Janja, Claudia Ghisolfi, Rogora, Ondra ou encore Manon Hily, quand les compétiteurs quittent le plastique, les lignes extrêmes n’ont qu’à bien se tenir.
À quoi ressemble « Papichulo »? Écoutons Thibault Lair, un des 17 ascensionnistes, qui nous la racontait parfaitement après son enchainement en 2023 : « Pour décrire la voie, on a une première partie qui est plutôt pénible car il faut faire un socle, clipper 3 dégaines au-dessus et redescendre s’asseoir sur le socle. Cette partie doit être aux alentours 8b+. Là, il faut récupérer totalement avant d’attaquer le « vrai 9a+ ». Après le socle on a 20 mouvements en 8c+ avec des sections plutôt bloc. Là, on a un repos vraiment pas très bon où il faut réussir à se relâcher un maximum car on arrive bien entamé avant d’attaquer une section d’environ 7A bloc qui mène à un repos plutôt bon. Et pour finir il reste 15/20m en 8b/+ très physique qui m’ont coûté 2 essais et où la gestion mentale est vraiment très dure. »
Pour Chaehyun, il s’agit de son second 9a+, puisqu’elle clippait le relais de la mythique « Rambla » en 2022. On est impatients de voir si elle va se frotter à d’autres voies dures d’Oliana, voire plus. Ce n’est pas comme si la falaise en manquait… On rappelle que seule la belge Anak Verhoeven est parvenue à plier « Joe mama » et que le dernier morceau de la trilogie des 9a+ de la falaise, le redoutable « Pachamama » n’a pas encore été vaincu pour une grimpeuse !

The second season proved to be the charm: South Korean Chaehyun Seo finally conquered ‘Papichulo’, Chris Sharma’s famous 9a+ (2009), after an unsuccessful trip in 2024. Still, she did then manage to onsight ‘Fish-eye’ 8c on the last day, so let’s just say that not everyone has the same definition of failure.
As at the end of every competition season, the tired bodies and minds of the IFSC’s competitors recharge their batteries on the rocks. And we’ve already seen this in recent weeks with Janja, Claudia Ghisolfi, Rogora, Ondra and Manon Hily: when the competitors leave the plastic behind, the extreme routes had better watch out.
What is ‘Papichulo’ like? Let’s hear from Thibault Lair, one of the 17 ascentionnists, who perfectly described it after completing the route in 2023: « To describe the route, the first part is quite difficult because you have to climb a base, clip three quickdraws above and then climb back down to sit on the base. This part must be around 8b+. There, you have to recover completely before tackling the “real 9a+”. After the ledge, there are 20 moves at 8c+ with some bouldering sections. Then there’s a really poor rest where you have to relax as much as possible because you’re already pretty worn-out before tackling a section of about 7A that leads to a fairly good rest. And to finish, there are 15/20m of very physical 8b/+ which took me two attempts and where mental management is really very tough. »
For Chaehyun, this is her second 9a+, since she clipped the belay on the legendary “Rambla” in 2022. We can’t wait to see if she’ll tackle other difficult routes in Oliana, or even harder ones. It’s not as if the cliff lacks them… It’s worth noting that when it comes to women, only Belgian Anak Verhoeven has managed to conquer “Joe Mama”, and that the last piece of the crag’s 9a+ trilogy, the formidable “Pachamama”, has yet to be conquered by a female climber!
