Charles Albert propose un 9A bloc à Bleau ! – Charles Albert claims a 9A boulder in Font!

  • 18/01/2019

Charles Albert has done the first ascent of a new extreme problem in Font about a month ago, although the news just came out. He doesn’t seem to have much hesitation regarding the grade and suggests 9A! The line is located at Rocher Brûlé on the Roche à Claude boulder, on the top of the hill (uphill the classic « Théorie des jeux ») and is named « No Kpote only », as reads a graffiti on the boulder. This very overhanging panel is notoriously controversial because it used to be a 19th century quarrymen shelter which was destroyed in recent years, before the opening of new boulder problems in 2011 (note that it is not known whether rock climbers destroyed the shelter intentionally for climbing purposes or if anyone else did). Since then, this boulder has stayed confidential but has been vandalized/spray painted and some holds have been hammered during the Spring of 2017. The problem is around 10 moves long. Charles describes the boulder as follows:

“No Kpote only” is a sitstart. It starts in the 8B located on the left-hand side of the boulder, climbing a crack. You have 3 traverse moves around 8A+ followed 2 extremely hard moves before reaching the undercling that is the stand start of “Gaia”  7C (note : some repetitors think that “Gaia” is closer to 8A). Those two moves go like this. You need to hold a crimp left hand going to a good right foot hold , before a hand-foot match and a dyno in a far two-finger pocket again with the right hand. Then you need to cross in the underclings of the stand start of “Gaia” and finish on it. Except for the 2 extreme moves, the holds have been hammered but it’s not too uncomfortable to climb.”

At 6 min 30 in this vid, Charles is making good attempts in the boulder

This is only the second 9A boulder problem proposition worldwide after Nalle Hukkataival’s “Burden of dreams”. Except this one was first climbed Barefoot! Note that Charles previously did two 8C+’s in Font with “La révolutionnaire” in Gros Sablons and “Hypothèse assis” in Cuvier, as well as two 8C’s with “Belial” and “Délire Onirique assis” in Rocher Saint-Germain, all of which still stand unrepeated.

More to come in the next Grimper Magazine.
