To sail across the Atlantic ocean to try your hand at the toughest big wall in the world! This is the crazy project fomented by pro climber Seb Berthe, who seeks to live his dreams while limiting his carbon footprint. “Cap sur El Cap” recounts with lightness and humour the 10-month journey of a team of 8 European adventurers (and Kroux, the dog!) in search of the unknown and untold sensations.

Watching the film, we have the strong impression that time stands still, so much has to be done to adapt to the unexpected without necessarily living for a deadline. High on their agenda is to take advantage of the opportunities created by the different stages of the voyage, from the 80 days aboard the sailboat to the mechanical setbacks linked to the shabby motorhome bought after landing in Mexico. Along the way, beautiful boulders here and there until, finally, rises the immensity of Yosemite.

In the background though, for Seb it also feels like a time trial to give himself every chance of making the best possible push in an ambitious Dawn Wall repeat attempt. But in the end the adventure outweighs the performance, and Seb abdicates at the infamous P14, after 23 days on the wall, 16 of which were spent trying only THAT pitch.

Of special note are the images filmed up close or from afar, which testify to the high-tech nature of the challenge, and the words of the first ascentionist of the route, Tommy Caldwell, on this collective enterprise. Finally it is Berthe’s companion, Soline, who succeeds in her challenge by repeating “Golden Gate”, hereby becoming one of the youngest women to free a route on El Cap. After 10 exciting months of travelling, it’s time to learn the lessons and tackle the return…

“Cap sur El Cap” therefore bears witness to a captivating human experience, with a close-knit team that gets up to take turns at the helm of the Samsara, as well as to second Seb on his push. The spirit of adventure in the original sense summarized in a film, a travel diary making you want to grab your luggage and up it! As an even better initiative, half of the profits will be donated to environmental associations.
