Critique livre : Mastermind – Book review : Mastermind

  • 28/12/2017

English below

Book review : Mastermind

Written by one of the big stars of the 80’s, English climbing legend Jerry Moffatt, “Mastermind” is one of the first books exclusively dedicated to mental training in climbing. Jerry was very active of the beginning of international climbing compétitions. Thanks to his great performances in this area (the Wold’s first 8c+ for example), he was been very often in the front of the stage. In fact, he even became the first World Champion of climbing in Leeds in 1989. After “Revelations” his autobiography in 2009, Jerry offers to share his experiences and his secret tricks in his new book, “Mastermind” released in October earlier this year.

The book’s general aspect and graphic design is somehow unusal and extremely cared for, with a closing elastic band, a very nice hard cover like a note book, and a pen holder. All of this creates an intriguing first contact and constitutes a good teaser before even opening the book.

The book is purposely interactive with « Lesson » pages where one can take notes and express his or her feelings regarding a certain topic. We find that highlighted « Wisdom » quotes are notable. Some of them are from famous rockclimbers but not only (Bruce Lee among others). They are often completed by contributions by top pro climbers like Ondra, Sharma, Hayes, Megos, a recollection of personal thoughts which consistently backs Jerry’s thoughts and anecdots in a brilliant group effort. The book is organized in series of small chapters where 3 big parts can be distinguished. The first and biggest part of the book deals with the major key aspects of mental strength. Aside from the usual topics like motivation, state of mind, optimism, vizualisation, some interesting aspects like keeping a diary or the importance of your routine and final thought are dealt with.

In the second part, each type of climbing (bouldering, onsight, solo, competition,…) is analysed from a mental strength perspective with a lot of insights by masters of each discipline. Who is indeed better than Honnold to talk about the mental aspects of free-soloing or Fischhuber when it comes to competition head game. The last part deals with the most striking performances in outdoors rockclimbing  and the mental game behind each of those accomplishments. Inspiring, with a part of dream!

Add to this, the good quality of the illustrations in the form of pics from famous photographers and you got yourself a truly remarkable book. Just a couple things on the down side : “Mastermind” is only available in English and it clearly targets strong climbers highly performance oriented, so the book may not be interesting for casual climbers. 2017 is ending with many historic sends. This is proof of vast improvements in training. This book and the training research of the Cafe Kraft gym in Germany, which edited this testpiece, are examples of this. The mental side of climbing has been very important for a long time and now with this book shared in the climbing community for performing at a high level.
