En début d’année, Giuliano Cameroni avait invité Dave Graham à essayer avec lui un projet de longue date à Val Bavona. 12 sessions plus tard, le Suisse signait la première de « Curve Ball », 8C+.
Délicat, sans prises mais en compression et surtout en friction, le bloc résista 13 séances de plus à l’américain de 43 ans à l’époque. C’est dans une publication parue aujourd’hui qu’on apprend cette croix du grimpeur toujours vert! Extrait:
« C’est extrêmement insaisissable ; à un moment donné, il y a friction, les mouvements fonctionnent, les pieds adhèrent, et l’instant d’après, plus rien de tout cela n’existe, comme si cela oscillait momentanément entre l’existence et l’inexistence, apparaissant et disparaissant du domaine du possible… Mais à un degré dingue. Je n’ai vraiment jamais ressenti de telles émotions en escaladant ; une convergence de « compréhension » associée à la sensation étrange et humiliante d’« incompréhension », c’était une aventure folle que de développer des stratégies et d’essayer de supporter les montagnes russes mentales consistant à « croire » que ce qui fonctionnait parfois finirait par « FONCTIONNER ». »
Difficile d’être sûr avec Dave, mais « Curve Ball » est à peu de choses près son 6ème 8C+ (+ ou – 10%). Rappelons pour la petite histoire irritante qu’ayant découvert la grimpe en 1997, à l’âge de 16 ans, il cochait 8b+ un an plus tard. Une légende !

Delicate, with no holds and requiring compression and above all pure friction, the boulder resisted the then 43-year-old American for 13 more sessions. We hear of this achievement by the evergreen climber in a publication that appeared today! Extract:
‘It’s super elusive; one moment friction exists, moves function, feet stick, moments later none of the above, as if its oscillating into existence momentarily, fleeting in an out of the realm of possibility…but to an absurd degree. Ive genuinely never felt such emotions while climbing; a convergence of “understanding” coupled with the awkward humbling sensation of “incomprehension”, it was a wild ride developing beta and trying to endure the mental rollercoaster of “believing” what worked sometimes, would eventually “WORK”.’
It’s hard to be sure with Dave, but ‘Curve Ball’ is more or less his sixth 8C+ (give or take 10%). As a little irritating side note, having discovered climbing in 1997 at the age of 16, he was ticking off 8b+ a year later.
