Enchainer le 9a classique de conti de Margalef, « Era Vella » (50m, première ascension Chris Sharma en 2010), tel est le défi que s’est lancé ces dernières années le grimpeur polyvalent britannique Tim Emmett, âgé de 51 ans. Connu pour ses réalisations en trad, deep water solo ou encore en glace, ce passionné touche-à-tout s’était donné comme objectif de réaliser son premier 9a malgré la cinquantaine approchant.
C’est ce week-end, après 8 années de trips catalans et 130 séances dans la voie (!), que Tim a répété ‘Era Vella », après être tombé pas moins de 8 fois après le crux principal ce séjour. Cerise sur la gateau, il enchaine la voie au dernier essai et au dernier jour de son séjour ! Tim devient un des grimpeurs les plus âgés à réaliser du 9a, détrônant son compatriote Ben Moon qui avait clippé le relais de « Rainshadow » à 49 ans et rejoignant Manolo, qui à 51 ans lui aussi enchainait « Eternit »! Les archives rappellent que Stevie Haston a dit avoir coché « Descente Lolitta » lors de sa 53ème année, « Hugh » la suivante. Anyway, les anglais vieillissent décidément bien ! Félicitations à Tim !

Climbing the classic 9a route in Margalef, “Era Vella” (50 meters, FA Chris Sharma 2010) is the challenge that 51-year-old British climber Tim Emmett has set himself in recent years. Known for his achievements in trad climbing, deep water soloing, and ice climbing, this passionate all-rounder set himself the goal of climbing his first 9a despite approaching his fifties.
This weekend, after eight years of trips to Catalonia and 130 attempts at the route (!), Tim finally completed “Era Vella,” after falling no less than eight times after the main crux during this trip. The icing on the cake was that he completed the route on his last attempt and on the last day of his trip! Tim becomes one of the oldest climbers to achieve 9a, dethroning his compatriot Ben Moon, who clipped the anchor of ‘Rainshadow’ at the age of 49, and joining Manolo, who also climbed ‘Eternit’ at the age of 51! The archives remind us that Stevie Haston said he ticked ‘Descente Lolitta’ in his 53rd year, and ‘Hugh’ the following year. Anyway, the English definitely age well! Congratulations to Tim!
