Jules Marchaland est en train de passer un mois d’août à bloc ! Le grimpeur niçois a réalisé en quelques semaines le toît de « Foundation’s Edge » à Fionnay en guise de premier 8C, puis quelques jours plus tard « Big Nose » (8C) en une demi-heure sur le même site. Il monte encore en puissance, avec en point d’orgue ce week-end, « Power of Now direct » (8C) flash à Magic Wood, une ligne ouverte par Simon Lorenzi en juillet 2022. C’est justement grâce à la complicité avec le mutant belge que Jules a pu flasher le problème.
En effet, cette réussite prend une dimension particulière car elle s’inscrit dans une aventure partagée : Jules Marchaland et Simon Lorenzi, amis proches, explorent depuis plusieurs semaines les blocs mythiques de Suisse ensemble. Ce compagnonnage, basé sur l’émulation et le partage, illustre l’esprit de la communauté de l’escalade, où l’amitié et la transmission jouent un rôle clé dans la quête de performance.
« C’était vraiment incroyable de vivre ça avec mon pote, et de pouvoir l’accompagner dans cette performance. Je le connais bien, j’ai beaucoup grimpé avec lui, donc, je n’étais pas surpris. J’estimais ses chances de réussite à 70/80%. Cette perf, c’est déjà une perf mondiale, et pourtant, je sais qu’il est encore capable de faire bien plus » confie Simon.
« En venant ici, je sentais que ce bloc était « fait » pour moi. Depuis le début, je l’avais dans le viseur, presque comme une obsession. Après de longues semaines d’attente, à guetter les bonnes conditions, j’ai enfin décidé de mettre mon essai flash. C’était intimidant de préparer cet essai ; pas de seconde chance, je devais y aller à fond. J’ai grimpé exactement comme je le voulais ; chaque mouvement était juste, en parfait état de flow. Quand je me suis rétabli, j’ai eu ce frisson unique ! J’ai encore du mal à réaliser. »
Jules Marchaland devient le deuxième grimpeur au monde à flasher un bloc coté 8C, quelques semaines après l’Allemand Yannick Flohé, qui avait réalisé le premier flash mondial d’un 8C avec « Foundation’s Edge ». Une entrée en matière fracassante dans la discipline pour Jules après une année pleine, marquée entre autres par la première ascension du « Bruit de l’acid » à Claret ce printemps pour son premier 9b. Jules Marchaland is having an amazing August! The climber from Nice completed the roof of “Foundation’s Edge” in Fionnay in just a few weeks forhis first 8C, then a few days later “Big Nose” (8C) in half an hour at the same place. He is still going strong, with the highlight of the weekend sending “Power of Now direct” (8C) flash at Magic Wood, a line opened by Simon Lorenzi in July 2022. It was thanks to his collaboration with the Belgian climber that Jules was able to flash the problem.
This achievement takes on a special significance because it is part of a shared adventure: Jules Marchaland and Simon Lorenzi, close friends, have been exploring the legendary boulders of Switzerland together for several weeks. This companionship, based on emulation and sharing, illustrates the spirit of the climbing community, where friendship and transmission play a key role in the quest for performance.
« It was really incredible to experience this with my friend and to be able to accompany him in this performance. I know him well, I’ve climbed with him a lot, so I wasn’t surprised. I estimated his chances of success at 70-80%. This performance is already a world-class achievement, and yet I know he is capable of much more, » says Simon.
« When I came here, I felt that this boulder was ‘made’ for me. From the beginning, I had my sights set on it, almost like an obsession. After long weeks of waiting, watching for the right conditions, I finally decided to give it a flash attempt. It was intimidating to prepare for this attempt; there were no second chances, I had to go all out. I climbed exactly as I wanted to; every move was right, in perfect flow. When I recovered, I had that unique thrill! I still find it hard to believe. »
Jules Marchaland becomes the second climber in the world to flash an 8C boulder, a few weeks after German Yannick Flohé, who achieved the world’s first flash of an 8C with “Foundation’s Edge.” A sensational introduction to the discipline for Jules and an amazing year for him, after the first ascent of « Le bruit de l’acid » in Claret this spring for his first 9b.
