Du nouveau Oliana ! Après la cacophonie de fin d’année dernière où la falaise a été annoncée interdite sur le papier puis finalement l’escalade a continué à y être tolérée, ce vendredi 23 janvier, a eu lieu une réunion importante à Peramola, mairie dont dépend la célèbre falaise catalane sur le cadastre. Le département de la culture catalane, auteur du décret d’interdiction avait rendez-vous avec des élus municipaux, ainsi que quelques pionniers du développement de la falaise et équipeurs des débuts tels Victor Fernandez et Chris Sharma, accompagnés de quelques représentants des grimpeurs locaux (Patxi Usobiaga, Climb Catalunya,…). Le but, discuter des interdictions autour des peintures rupestres sur la partie gauche de la falaise, déjà protégées par un grillage depuis plus d’une décennie.
La directrice générale adjointe du Patrimoine architectural, archéologique et paléontologique de la Catalogne , Marina Miquel a tenu à souligner qu’il n’y a « aucun problème » à rendre l’escalade compatible avec la protection des peintures dans le cadre d’une procédure administrative liée à l’inscription du site au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. C’est pourquoi, désormais, une collaboration sera mise en place avec les locaux de la falaise de Rumbau et la mairie de Peramola dans le futur afin de définir clairement les limites et de délimiter l’espace dédié à la préservation de ce patrimoine. Ainsi, la possibilité de modifier certains itinéraires dans cette zone, au plus près des peintures, sera analysée. L’objectif, expliquent-ils, est d’éviter d’éventuels impacts, tels que des chutes de pierres, et de garantir leur préservation maximale. Un consensus devrait être trouvé dans le futur.
Ouf de soulagement, l’intégralité de la falaise ne sera donc pas interdite à la pratique, mais des voies mythiques et classiques comme « Mind Control » ou « Humildes pa arriba » pourraient voir de nouveau une modification de leur départ, ou au pire être prohibées. C’est donc plutôt un nouvel happy end d’un nouveau rebondissement sur cette falaise de renommée mondiale, après l’incendie qui avait touché les lieux en juin 2022. Et, après Santa Linya, a priori un futur exemple de lieu où coexistent respectueusement escalade de haut niveau et patrimoine culturel.

News from Oliana! After the confusion at the end of last year, when the cliff was declared prohibited on the paper but climbing continued to be tolerated, an important meeting took place on Friday, January 23, in Peramola, the village where is the famous Catalan cliff. The Catalan Department of Culture, which issued the ban, met with municipal officials, as well as some of the pioneers of the crag’s development and early bolters such as Victor Fernandez and Chris Sharma, joined by a few representatives of local climbers (Patxi Usobiaga, Climb Catalunya, etc.). The aim was to discuss the bans on cave paintings on the left part of the wall, which have already been protected by fencing for over a decade.
The Deputy Director General of Architectural, Archaeological, and Paleontological Heritage of Catalonia, Marina Miquel, emphasized that there is “no problem” in making climbing compatible with the protection of the rock carvings as part of an administrative procedure related to the site’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. For this reason, collaboration will now be established with the local climbers of the Rumbau cliff and the town hall of Peramola in order to clearly define the boundaries and delimit the area dedicated to the preservation of this heritage. The possibility of modifying certain routes in this area, closest to the paintings, will be analyzed. The aim, they explain, is to avoid any potential impacts, such as rock falls, and to ensure maximum preservation. A consensus should be reached in the future.
Phew, what a relief! The entire cliff will not be closed to climbing, but legendary and classic routes such as “Mind Control” and “Humildes pa arriba” could see their starting points modified again, or at worst be prohibited. This is therefore another happy ending to a new twist in the tale of this world-famous cliff, following the fire that ravaged the place in June 2022. And, after Santa Linya, it looks set to become another example of a place where hard core climbing and cultural heritage can coexist respectfully.
