Sébastien Berthe réussit Le Nose en libre – Sébastien Berthe free climbed the Nose

  • 13/11/2019

A suivre !

Belgian pro climber Sébastien Berthe just realized a child dream with the 7th fre climb ascent of the Nose, 900m, El Capitan, Yosemite. The push go took him 8 days, with all the gear pré-placed in the crux pitches. With his partner Loic Debry Sébastien planned to stay 6 days in the wall but “Changing corners” (L26, 8b+) made resistance. The team décided to continue to stay until they had no food, and the 2 days more of attempts permitted the success. Sébastien took a long time in the wall because he never tried top rope the crux pitches before, just attempting them from the ground. It was his 3 visit in The Nose after an aid ascent in a day 3 years ago and a failed free ascent in 2017 where he couldnt try the crux pitchs due to wet parts of the wall. A dream comes true for Sébastien who is born the year of the first free ascent of the route (by Lynn Hill in 1993). SOme Nose free ascents could follow, this end of year, Nina Caprez being close 2 weeks ago and Babsi Zangerl currently scouting the difficulties of the line… To be followed!

The Nose complete free ascents :
– Lynn Hill by 2 times, 1993 and 1994
– Scott Burke in 1998 (12 jours, Great roof in top rope)
– Tommy Caldwell in 2005
– Jorg Verhoeven in 2014
– Keita Kurakami in 2018 ( 5 days)
– Conor Herson (3 days aged 15)
