On ne présente plus Stéfanie et Cédric Lo Piccolo, légendes de l’escalade niçoise, mariés, deux enfants, qui depuis près de deux décennies repoussent leurs limites en falaise, collectionnant les voies extrêmes sur les falaises locales. Après la réalisation de Stéfanie dans “TripTikTonik” cet automne, le couple a décidé de se focaliser cet hiver sur “Comité d’accueil” (9a) sur la face Sud de Séranon, une voie équipée par Christophe Louis et Elie Morieux dans l’arrière pays Niçois, libérée par Enzo Oddo en 2020. Stéfanie et Cédric ont essayé la voie irrégulièrement en saison hivernale depuis 3 ans. Alors que Stéfanie a répété la voie en février dernier pour son 2ème 9a, c’est Cédric qui vient de réaliser la voie, finalisant le happy end d’un processus peu commun : le travail d’un 9a en couple.
“J’ai découvert la falaise il y a 3 ans et la voie par accident. Il faisait froid et je n’arrivais pas à mettre des essais dans le 8b, et ayant une base de force, j’ai décidé d’aller visiter le 9a, et à ma grande surprise, j’ai réalisé tous les mouvements !” relate Stéfanie.
Cédric lui, confie en avoir bavé : “Je ne rentrais pas les doigts dans une prise du crux, du coup j’ai d’abord écumé le reste de la falaise. La deuxième année j’ai ensuite trouvé une astuce qui me permettait de passer. Stéfanie a été forte de suite dans ce style léger dévers, elle arrivait à prendre la prise du crux d’une certaine façon, perso j’ai dû trouver aussi ma séquence mais le calage a été beaucoup plus long. J’ai enfin mis un bon run direct il y a 2 ans où j’ai passé le pas de bloc mais je suis tombé après. Ensuite il a fait trop chaud, et ce n’est pas le genre de voies que je suis capable de réaliser sans un minimum de conditions. L’année dernière Stéfanie s’est fait mal au doigt dedans, donc on n’y est pas retournés, jusqu’à cet hiver. Et là j’ai de nouveau déjoué, tombant pas mal de fois tout en haut, avec l’impression d’avoir raté le coche : une bataille mentale assez difficile à livrer, où j’ai dû jongler entre problème de motivation et de conditions. Je l’ai finalement réalisée dernièrement de manière assez inattendue, un jour sans pression où on était venu récupérer le matos laissé là-bas pour clôturer la saison.”
Stéfanie poursuit : “Au début de l’année j’ai trouvé une nouvelle méthode pour le dernier mouvement de remontée d’inversée, avec un petit calage un peu plus en statique, et cela a fait la différence, je suis tombée de plus en plus haut, et j’ai pu enchainer en février après 4-5 chutes là haut. On y allait principalement tous les deux en semaine quand les enfants sont à l’école, cela a dû me prendre une vingtaine de séances réparties sur 3 ans.”
Les prochains projets ?
“C’est vrai qu’avec l’utilisation des genouillères, des projets qui nous semblaient impossibles il y a dix ans, notamment pour Stéfanie en raison de son allonge, deviennent finalement envisageables. On va continuer à projeter à la maison.” confie Cédric, toujours motivé, qui compte bien continuer de grimper à fond dans le coin malgré le fait qu’il ait poncé une bonne partie des falaises de l’extrême Sud-Est. Un bel exemple de fanatisme malgré une vie de famille à côté !

We no longer need to introduce Stéfanie and Cédric Lo Piccolo, legends of climbing around Nice, married, two children, who for nearly two decades have been pushing their limits on the crags, collecting extreme routes on the local cliffs. After Stéfanie’s feat in “TripTikTonik” this fall, the couple decided to focus this winter on “Comité d’accueil” (9a) on the south face of Séranon, a route bolted by Christophe Louis and Elie Morieux in the hinterland of Nice, freed by Enzo Oddo in 2020. Stéfanie and Cédric have tried the route irregularly in the winter season for 3 years. While Stéfanie repeated the route last February for her 2nd 9a, it is Cédric who just completed the route, with the happy ending of an unusual process: the work of a 9a as a couple.
“I discovered the cliff 3 years ago and the route by accident. It was cold and I couldn’t put tries in the 8b, and having a base of strength, I decided to visit the 9a, and to my surprise, I did all the moves!” says Stefanie.
Cédric confides troubles with the route: “I couldn’t put my fingers into a hold of the crux, so I first climbed the rest of the route of the crag. The second year I found a little trick that allowed me to make progress. Stéfanie was immediately strong in this style slighty overhanging, she managed to take the hold of the crux in a certain way, personally I also had to find my sequence but the process took much longer. I finally put in a good go 2 years ago where I passed the crux but fell in the upper section. Then it was too hot, and it’s not the kind of route I’m able to do without a minimum of conditions. Last year Stéfanie hurt her finger in it, so we didn’t go back there, until this winter. And then I struggled a lot, falling quite a few times at the very top , with the impression of having missed the target: a rather difficult mental battle to fight, where I had to juggle between problems of motivation and conditions. I finally realized it recently in a rather unexpected way, one day without pressure where we came to pick up the gear left there to end the season.”
Stéfanie continues: “At the beginning of the year I found a new beta for the last section with the underclings, with a little more static move, and that made the difference, I fell more and more higher, and I was able to send it in February after 4-5 falls up there. We both went there mainly during the week when the children are at school, it must have cost me about twenty sessions spread over 3 years .”
Next projects?
“It’s true that with the use of knee pads, projects that seemed impossible to us ten years ago, especially for Stéfanie because of her span, finally become possible. We will continue to project at home.” confides Cédric, still motivated, who intends to continue climbing hard in the area despite the fact that he has already climbed a good part of the routes in the extreme South-East. A fine example of fanaticism despite a family life on the other side!
