Cette saison estivale a permis trois ascensions féminines de la très esthétique voie, “Digital Crack”, réputée être le plus haut 8a de France. Cette ligne divisée en deux longueurs (6c et 8a) remonte un monolithe granitique situé sur l’arête des Cosmiques à l’Aiguille du Midi , à près de 3800 mètres. Tout d’abord, en juin dernier, Daila Ojeda, la grimpeuse originaire des Canaries est sortie de sa zone de confort pour sa première grande-voie et a pour l’occasion sorti des crampons. Son récit peut être lu ici et la vidéo de son ascension, récemment mise en ligne, est visible en bas de cet article. Ensuite, la chamoniarde Camille Didillon a réussi a voie à son tour fin août. Enfin, la française Caroline Minvielle a profité d’un créneau météo ce week-end et nous partage le récit de son ascension.
“Cette voie, j’y suis allée une première fois en août 2016 avec Cedric (Lachat), par curiosité. La ligne était majestueuse et j’étais curieuse de voir si elle était aussi belle à grimper qu’à observer J’étais assez sceptique, pour moi c’était juste beau à regarder … En fait, c’est incroyable à grimper, surtout quand tu aimes les murs exigeants à petites prises. C’est un mur de 8 m puis un dièdre ouvert de 20 m environ. Le premier mur constitue le crux sur petites réglettes et mauvais pieds avec des mouvements relativement loins. Le crux est entre le 2ème et le 3ème point. Le dièdre ouvert est moins dur mais tout autant exigeant : tu grimpes avec les pouces en opposition, les mains en appui sur les paumes et tu charges des pieds vraiment petits mais comme c’est vertical et un granit adhérent ce n’est pas gênant.”
“J’y suis allée une fois en août 2016 pour voir avec Cedric. J’ai fait une montée de travail puis un essai mais je ne tenais pas assez les prises et je subissais vraiment l’altitude. Cédric a fait la voie dans la journée mais en 7 ou 8 essais, il n’avait pas trop calé le crux et tombait toujours puis repartait sans se reposer ! Du Cedric tout craché quoi ! Depuis j’ai eu cette voie en tête. Je n’ai pas de créneau pour y retourner en 2016 et j’attendais l’été 2017 avec impatience pour y aller. Au final, je n’ai pas eu de créneau de dispo pour y aller cet été et j’avais un peu laissé tomber pour cette année et pensais déjà à l’année prochaine. Puis un collègue, Matthieu Hamon, m’a motivé pour y aller dimanche dernier, seul jour de dispo. C’était une opportunité en or même si j’avais peur qu’il fasse trop froid en plein mois d’octobre et j’étais bien consciente qu’il n’y aurait pas d’autres créneau en 2017. J’y suis donc allée dans l’idée de profiter d’une belle journée en montagne, advienne que pourra ! Je n’avais absolument aucun souvenir de la voie et de ma montée de 2016… Donc j’ai passé 1h à retrouver les méthodes, à marquer les prises. C’était long et pas facile car il n’y avait pas une trace mais je sentais que je tenais mieux les prises que l’année d’avant. Puis j’ai mis un essai un peu sous pression car ça passait à l’ombre et j’avais peur qu’il fasse trop froid. Je suis tombée au crux au 2 ème point. Repos de 15 min et j’y suis retournée quasiment tout à l’ombre et ça a fait ! Beau combat de concentration car je n’avais pas intégré tous les mouvements mais j’ai savouré chaque mouvement après le crux !”
“Je n’en revenais pas de l’avoir fait dans la journée : un mix d’envie, de non pression car je n’espérais pas la faire si vite, de plaisir d’être là-haut et de concentration. Concernant le souvenir de cette voie, je dirai un gros moment de partage que ce soit avec Cédric ou avec Matthieu. Passer une journée là-haut, avec un temps exceptionnel, implique déjà une belle journée en montagne. Avec Cedric, on a découvert la voie ensemble et on a galéré ensemble ! Et ce coup-ci, Matthieu s’est occupé de moi toute la journée : il est allé me mettre les dégaines dans la voie à la perche en se faisant bien plaisir (!) et il était là avec juste l’envie de m’assurer et de partager ce moment d’effort. Son soutien m’a énormément aidé et c’était juste fantastique de réussir la voie, à ce moment-là, quand il était là. Une belle récompense pour tous les deux. Donc clairement je me souviendrai de ces beaux moments de partage à deux quand je repenserai à Digital Crack. “
This summer has seen three notable female ascents of the very aesthetic “Digital Crack”, known as the highest 8a of France. This two-pitch line (6c and 8a) ascends a granite montolithe situated on the ridge of the Cosmiques at the Aiguille du Midi, at an elevation of nearly 3800 m. Last June, famous Canary Islands native Daila Ojeda was first to step outside her comfort zone (she had to learn how to hike with crampons for the occasion and it was her first MP experience) and give it a try. Her story can be read here and the video of her ascent was recently put online and is visible at the end of this article. Then late August local climber Camille Didillon also repeated it. Last weekend, it is french climber Caroline Minvielle who took advantage of a good weather window to claim the send. She shares with us the story of her ascent:
“I first went to this route in August 2016 with Cedric Lachat, out of curiosity. The line was majestic and I was curious to see if it climbed beautiful as it looked. To be honest, I was quite skeptical, for me it was just beautiful to look at … But, in fact, it’s incredible to climb too, especially when you like demanding walls with small holds. The route is an 8 m-tall wall followed by an open dihedral of 20 m. The first wall, between the 2nd and the 3rd quickdraws, is where you encounter the crux on small crimps and bad feet with relatively far reaches. The open dihedral is easier but just as much demanding: you climb with your thumbs in opposition, the palms of your hands and you load on really small feet but as it is vertical and on a rough granite it is still ok.”
“I went there once in August 2016 to check it out with Cedric. I gave it two tries then but I did not manage to hold the crux holds and I really struggled with the high elevation. Cedric sent the route in the day but in 7 or 8 tries, he had not checked out the crux and kept falling and starting trying again without resting! Typical Cédric! From that day on, I kept this route in mind. I did not find time to come back in 2016 and I was looking forward to the summer of 2017. I ended up having no time again this summer but a colleague, Matthieu Hamon, motivated me to go back last Sunday, the only available day. It was a unique and unexpected opportunity even if I was afraid it would be too cold mid-October. So I went without expectations, just to enjoy a nice day in the mountains. I had absolutely no memory of the route and my attempts of 2016 … So I spent 1h finding the sequence again and spotting the holds. It was long and difficult process because there were no chalk marks on the rock. But I felt in better shape than a year ago. Then I gave it a first try a bit under pressure because the route went in the shade and I was afraid it was going to be too cold. I fell off the crux at the second quickdraw. So I decided to rest for 15 min and I tried again with almost the whole route shaded but I did it! It was a nice fight that required full focus sinced I had not fully memorized all the movements but I have enjoyed every single move after the crux! “
I couldn’t believe I had managed to send it that day; it was a a mix of determination, focus, lack of pressure -because I wasn’t hoping to send it so quickly- and, most of all, just enjoying being up there. Regarding my memories of this route and the ascent, I would say it was a great moment of sharing both with Cédric and with Matthieu. Spending a day up there with an exceptional weather already makes for a beautiful day in the mountains. With Cedric, we discovered the route together and we struggled together! This year, Matthieu took care of me the whole day through: he put up the quickdraws and he was there with just the wish to belay me and share this moment of effort. His support helped me a lot and it was just fantastic to send the route when he was there. A nice reward for both of us. I will remember these beautiful sharing moments when I think back about Digital Crack.
