Sensation à Squamish ! Le fort et discret grimpeur local Gabe Lawson (29 ans) vient de réaliser son projet à long terme avec la première ascension de “The Megg”, proposant 8C+, soit le bloc le plus dur du Canada ! Le bloc est situé de l’autre côté du bloc de “Space Monkey” dans le secteur connu de The Farm (Squamish’s North Walls). En projet depuis de longues années, et essayé par pas mal de grimpeurs forts locaux ou de stars internationales de passage, “The Megg” a été défriché par Gabe Lawson fin 2021. Mais il a commencé à le bosser sérieusement en avril dernier, pour un total de 16 séances et 10 mois de travail. Le bloc est assez long, comportant 16 mouvements durs avant le réta.
“On pourrait le décomposer en 2 séquences, une très puissante, et une autre très très délicate, avec aucune décontraction entre.”
Jusqu’alors, le bloc le plus dur des lieux se nommait “Singularity” 8B+/C ouvert par Tim Clifford en 8B et recoté par Nalle Hukkataival en 2017.

Big news in Squamish! The strong and under-the-radar local climber Gabe Lawson (29) has just completed his long-term project with the first ascent of “The Megg”, proposing it at 8C+, the hardest boulder in Canada! The line is located across the boulder from ‘Space Monkey’ in the area of The Farm (Squamish’s North Walls). Known to be a project that has been open for many years, and tried by quite a few strong local climbers as well passing international stars, Gabe Lawson started looking at ‘The Megg’ at the end of 2021. But he started working on it seriously in April last, for a total of 16 sessions spread over 10 months. The block is quite long, comprising 16 hard moves before the mantle.
“We could break it down into 2 sequences, one very powerful, and another very very delicate, with no rest in between.”
Until then, the hardest boulder in the country was ‘Singularity’ 8B+/C, opened by Tim Clifford as 8B but upgraded by Nalle Hukkataival in 2017.
