Décidément, c’est dans le Rätikon que cela se passe en ce moment, avec de grimpeurs profitant des fortes chaleurs et de l’anticyclone pour aller réaliser des voies au Rätikon, un endroit en altitude réputé pour ses conditions changeantes et souvent très humides. Après Lara Neumeier qui s’est offerte la classique « Silbergeier », c’est au tour des expérimentés Babsi Zangerl et Jacopo Larcher d’apporter leur touche avec la première ascension d’un projet des lieux nommé « Next generation » sur la face Ouest du Zwölfferkopf. Défriché en 2018 par Pio Jutz, Christian Fritz, Klaus Müller and Christof Thaler, la longueur clé demeurait invaincue. « Next Generation » propose 6 longueurs pour 170 mètres d’escalade : 7a, 8a+, 8b+, 7b+, 7c+ et 6c sur le calcaire exigeant typique des lieux !
« Cette voie est probablement le mini-big wall le plus proche de chez nous, mais elle est tout de même située à très haute altitude. L’approche depuis notre appartement jusqu’au pied de la voie prend environ trois heures, ce qui en fait une journée assez exigeante. L’escalade est tout simplement incroyable sur cette paroi calcaire parfaite. La voie a été gravie pour la première fois en 2018 par Pio Jutz, véritable pionnier de l’alpinisme en Autriche. Il a établi toutes les lignes de cette paroi. Mais « Next Generation » attendait toujours sa première ascension en libre. Nous avons testé la voie pour la première fois en 2022, mais n’y sommes jamais retournés, jusqu’à cette semaine. Avec la hausse des températures dans les vallées, nous avons pensé que c’était le moment idéal pour remonter et tenter une nouvelle fois notre chance. Après cette longue randonnée, nous avons passé du temps sur la paroi à déterminer les méthodes des deux longueurs clé. Nous avons tous les deux réussi à enchainer la première longueur difficile, et Jacopo a également réussi la longueur du crux. J’ai chuté une fois au crux, mais cela me semblait très prometteur aussi. Finalement, nous avons manqué de temps et avons dû abandonner. Mais la cerise sur le gâteau d’une journée presque parfaite a été de redescendre dans la vallée en quelques minutes seulement avec nos parapentes. Après ça, on savait que ça pouvait marcher ; il ne nous restait plus qu’à revenir et à essayer. Deux jours plus tard, on a refait toute la montée et on a grimpé toute la voie en libre. On a tous les deux grimpé en tête les trois longueurs les plus difficiles, et le soir, on était au sommet du Zwöferkopf. Un sommet vraiment génial, avec vue sur notre point de départ le matin même. On a vraiment adoré cette grosse journée. Un grand merci à Pio Jutz pour cette voie incroyable ! »

On Friday the 20th of June 2025, Babsi Zangerl and Jacopo Larcher managed to red-point an existing project called « Next Generation » in The Rätikon, Austria. « Next Generation », on the Zwölferkopf West Face, was first established by Pio Jutz, Christian Fritz, Klaus Müller and Christof Thaler in 2018. The original team were, unfortunately, unable to free-climb the 8b+ crux-pitch, leaving the project open. The route is 170m in length and six pitches long, with the individual pitches graded as follows: 7a, 8a+, 8b+, 7b+, 7c+, 6c. Babsi and Jacopo spent one day looking at the route in 2022, before returning early last week for a proper attempt. After one day of working the crux pitches, Babsi and Jacopo were able to make the first red-point ascent of Next Generation this past Friday. Babsi commented:
“This line is probably the closest mini big wall to our home—but still, it’s way up in the mountains. The approach from our flat to the base takes around three hours, which makes for a pretty demanding day. The climbing is simply amazing on this perfect limestone wall. The route was first climbed in 2018 by Pio Jutz—a true pioneer of alpine climbing in Austria. He established all the lines on this wall. But Generation Next was still waiting for its first redpoint ascent. We first checked out the route back in 2022, but never returned—until this week. With the temperatures rising in the valleys, we felt like it was the perfect time to head back up and give it another go. After the long hike, we spent some time on the wall figuring out the beta for the two crux pitches. Both of us managed to send the first hard pitch, and Jacopo also successfully climbed the crux pitch. I had one fall at the crux, but it felt very promising to me too. Eventually we ran out of time and had to bail. But the cherry on top of an almost perfect day was flying back down to the valley in just a few minutes with our paragliders. After that, we knew it could work—we just needed to come back and give it a proper try. Two days later, we hiked all the way up again and climbed the whole line free. Both of us led the three hardest pitches, and in the evening we stood on top of Zwöferkopf. Such a cool summit, looking down at where we started that same morning.
