Depuis quelques jours, l’Angleterre fait parler d’elle. D’abord Anak Verhoeven enchainait ze « Rainshadow », 9a, à Malham Cove il y a quelques jours, s’offrant la première féminine de la voie. Ensuite sortait un entretien bien sympa de Ondra à Malham avec UK Climbing à voir ici. La sonnette d’alarme retentit. Ondra chez les amis anglais: why?! Quelle sorcellerie préparait-il?
On le sait depuis quelques minutes: il visait (au moins pour commencer…) rien de moins que le flash de « Lexicon ». Lexicon, kézako? Il s’agit d’un E11, donc voie de trad, ouvert en 2021 par Neil Gresham, une légende du trad outre-Manche. E11, c’est-à-dire la cotation trad la plus dure jusqu’à « Bon voyage » de James Pearson, proposée à E12 (et accessoirement confirmée par Ondra).
Sans rentrer dans le détail sibyllin des cotations anglaises de trad, disons que E11 signifie une difficulté de grimpe certaine (autour de 8b+ ici: ne vous fiez pas à ‘7a’, la cotation technique anglaise de « Lexicon »…), ainsi qu’un engagement pas piqué des hannetons. La voie n’est pas réputée particulièrement dangereuse, mais comme on le voit dans la vidéo ci-dessous une chute en haut ne peut pas laisser indifférent, et nécessite de l’ingéniosité quant aux protections, ainsi qu’un assureur au taquet. L’assureur de Ondra n’était autre que le premier ascentionniste, et il a avoué à UKC qu’il s’agissait de la chose la plus incroyable à laquelle il avait assistée en 40 ans d’escalade.
Cet énième haut fait de Ondra mérite en effet toute notre attention: il s’agit ni plus ni moins que d’un des flash de trad le plus dur jamais réalisé, avec notamment celui de Seb Berthe dans « Le Voyage » ou celui d’alex Megos dans « The Path » à Lake Louise. Pour l’anecdote, il s’agit de la sixième ascension de « Lexicon » (le gotha du trad l’ayant répétée: McClure, McLeod, Matt Wright, James Pearson).
Par ailleurs, notons que ce flash a été fait des prises (en rappel), comme l’avait fait James Pearson lors de sa propre tentative de flash. Malgré son échec, fin nez, l’anglais avait remarqué combien la voie se prêtait au flash pourvu que votre niveau fût suffisamment élevé.
« Soudain seul » mène donc à « Lexicon ». Qui l’eut cru?
La question, maintenant, est la suivante: étant donné que Pavey Ark n’est pas loin de Dumbarton, Ondra va-t-il tenter le flash du premier E11, « Rhapsody »? Les genoux nous en tremblent.

England has been in the news for a few days now. First Anak Verhoeven climbed ‘Rainshadow’, 9a, at Malham Cove a few days ago for the first female ascent of the route. Then came Ondra’s interview in Malham with UK Climbing, which you can see here. The alarm bells started ringing. Ondra in England: why?! What sorcery was he up to?
We’ve known for a few minutes now: he was aiming (at least to begin with…) for nothing less than the flash of ‘Lexicon’. Lexicon is an E11, or trad route, opened in 2021 by Neil Gresham, a trad legend across the Channel. E11, in other words the hardest trad grade until James Pearson’s ‘Bon voyage’, proposed at E12 (and incidentally confirmed as such by Ondra).
Without going into the sibylline details of English trad grading, let’s just say that E11 means a definite climbing difficulty (around 8b+ here: don’t be fooled by ‘7a’, the English technical rating of ‘Lexicon’…), as well as a commitment that’s not exactly benign. The route is not reputed to be particularly dangerous, but as you can see in the video below, a fall from the top cannot leave you indifferent, and requires ingenuity in terms of protection, as well as a clued-in belayer. Ondra’s belayer was none other than the first ascentionist, who admitted to UKC that it was the most incredible thing he had witnessed in 40 years of climbing.
This umpteenth Ondra feat deserves our full attention: it is nothing less than one of the hardest trad flash ever made. Remember Seb Berthe also flashed « Le Voyage » at Annot and Alex Megos « The Path » at Lake Louise.
It’s also worth noting that this flash was done without direct inspection of the holds or pro placements (by abseiling), as James Pearson had done during his own flash attempt. Despite his failure at the end of the nose, the Englishman had noticed how the route lent itself to a flash attempt provided your level was high enough.
‘Soudain seul’ leading to “Lexicon”. Who would have thought?
The question now is this: given that Pavey Ark is not far from Dumbarton, will Ondra attempt to flash the very first E11, ‘Rhapsody’? My knees are shaking.
