Depuis début mars et sa libération de “At Home Cornus”, Cédric Lachat s’est remis au travail dans l’extension de “Fantasia”. La semaine passée, le plus français des grimpeurs suisses a réalisé la première ascension de cette voie équipée par Romain Gendey non loin de chez lui dans le Vercors, et propose son premier 9b ! Un aboutissement pour Cédric qui accumulait depuis les années les voies sportives en 9a ou 9a+ aux 4 coins de l’Europe sans parvenir à réaliser une voie un tout petit cran plus élevé. Après avoir projeté “Mami Chula” à Oliana puis “Eagle-4” à St-Léger avec la difficulté d’être performant sur des falaises relativement éloignées de ses bases, la réalisation de “Fantasia” à la maison marque certainement un nouveau fait d’armes dans sa carrière de grimpeur pro, déjà bien étoffée par de nombreuses réalisations en grande voie. Cédric nous en dit plus sur “Fantasia” et le processus.

“Entre les travaux dans ma maison, j’ai passé beaucoup de temps dans “Fantasia” ces deux derniers mois, et je suis passé par tous les états. J’étais assez proche dès que je m’y suis remis, tombant dans les derniers mouvements assez vite. Puis j’ai régressé dans la voie, ensuite il a fait chaud… J’ai pris du repos et j’ai attendu patiemment le retour des conditions pour enfin concrétiser. J’avais déjà consacré à ce projet 5 séances l’an passé, mais j’avais rapidement abandonné, ne bougeant pas dans les mouvements. Ce printemps je n’ai pas lâché la voie, à raison d’une séance dedans tous les 2 jours où je faisais 3 montées par jour, et grâce à cet acharnement, la voie a fini par tomber !

“Après le 8b+ classique en guise de L1 qu’il faut arriver à faire en 2 minutes sans trop se fatiguer, vient un repos sur un genou, puis l’extension débute avec une partie plutôt courte : 26 mouvements de pure résistance jusqu’en haut. Le crux principal, situé juste après le repos de la L1, est dur sans être extrême, environ 7B+ bloc, mais je ne le passais qu’une fois sur deux, en étant sur-tendu dans tous les mouvements. Il faut bien gainer et bien fermer les bras pour s’en extirper, avant de résister dans une section à haute intensité où même les clippages sont particulièrement difficiles. Je me suis effondré de nombreuses fois dans les 3 derniers mouvements, complètement pété. Pour moi, c’est sans nul doute la voie d’escalade la plus dure que j’ai réalisée, donc je propose 9b ; cependant je me pose la question de savoir si c’est pas plus facile pour un plus grand tellement certains mouvements me semblent durs en raison de l’éloignement entre les prises. En tout cas, pour les gabarits de ma morphologie (Cédric mesure 1 mètre 72), c’est ultra intense et un vrai challenge !”

À 38 ans, Cédric continue de vieillir et de se bonifier comme le bon vin. “Je suis peut-être un peu moins fort physiquement mais je trouve que je grimpe beaucoup plus juste qu’il y a quelques années”, conclut-t’il, en insistant sur le fait que la situation est particulièrement complexe localement. “Nous négocions actuellement avec les propriétaires pour pouvoir continuer à grimper sur nos spots, mais la situation est compliquée. De nombreux secteurs sont interdits, et à d’autres endroits nous marchons sur des œufs. Si vous venez grimper dans le coin, merci de vous renseigner, d’être respectueux et discret sur place.”

Since the beginning of March and his first ascent of “At Home Cornus”, Cédric Lachat has been back on another project with the extension of “Fantasia”. Last week, the Frenchest of Swiss climbers made the first ascent of this route, bolted by Romain Gendey close from his home in Vercors and proposes his first 9b! A highlight for Cédric who had been accumulating 9a or 9a+ sport routes for years all over Europe without managing to reach the next level. After projecting “Mami Chula” in Oliana then “Eagle-4” in St-Léger, with the problem of performing on extreme routes relatively far away from his base, the send of “Fantasia” at home certainly marks a new feat in his pro climbing career, after all numerous hard ticks on multipitch routes. Cédric tells us more about “Fantasia” and the process.

“In between the DIY at home, I’ve been spending a lot of time in “Fantasia” for the past two months, and I’ve been through all the stages. When I got back on it I got quickly pretty close, falling on the last moves. Then I regressed in the route, then it was hot… I took a rest and waited patiently for the return of the conditions to finally finish it. I had already devoted 5 sessions to this project last year, but had quickly given up as I couldn’t connect many moves. This spring, I just didn’t give up: a session on “Fantasia” every 2 days where I gave 3 goes per day, and thanks to this siege, the route went down!
“After the classic 8b+ as P1, which you have to optimise and climb in 2 minutes without getting too tired, comes a one-kneebar rest, then the extension begins, rather short but punchy: 26 movements of pure resistance to the top. The main crux is located just after the rest, it’s hard without being extreme, around 7B+, but I only passed it half the time, being over-stretched in all the large span moves. You need to pull hard and get good body tension in order to stay on the wall before fighting in a high intensity section where clipping the draws is also difficult. I failed many times in the last 3 movements, completely pumped out. For me, it’s without doubt the hardest route I’ve climbed, so I suggest 9b, however I wonder if it’s not easier for taller climbers because some movements seem hard to me due to the span required. In any case, for the climbers of my size (Cédric is 1.72m tall), it’s ultra intense and a real challenge!”

At 38, Cédric continues to age and improve like a good wine. “I’m a little bit less strong physically but I find that I climb better compared to a few years ago” he concludes, insisting on the fact that the local climbing situation is particularly complex. “We are currently negotiating with the landowners to be able to continue climbing at our local crags, but the situation remains complicated. Many sectors are prohibited, and in other places we are walking on eggshells. If you want to climb in the area, please stay well informed and be respectful and discreet at the crag.”
