Film: Les voleurs d’écho

  • 22/01/2018

Back in March 2013 a french climbing squad had already explored the mineral potential of Tchad. The expedition was composed of six climbers, a geographer and two ethnologists. The group, supervised by the Office of Tourism, had assessed the large climbing potential thanks to previous trips in the various mountain ranges in the north of the country (Bourkou; Ennedi; and Tibesti). The goal then, aside from climbing, was also to help the region develop the tourism industry based on outdoor activities such as rock climbing. Indeed, the Ennedi region alone is as large as Switzerland and encompasses several mountain ranges with virtually an endless potential for rock climbing. In 2017, the team was back to pick up where they had left off. Their first leg was in Berete in the Abtouyour mountain, where they went on a multi-pitch bolting spree on excellent quality granite walls.

Then came the Ennedi, where another round of stellar multi-pitch routes were bolted. The movie makes great use of drone footage to show how gorgeous those places are and how good the rock climbing is in such breathtaking settings. We were particularly amazed by the fly over views of the Archei canyon and the discovery of the 40 Doors mountain.

Beyond climbing, emphasis is put, in this movie, on the ties that grew between the team and the locals, a nomadic population called the Gorans whose ways and traditions are thousands of years old. The movie shows the bridging between the two worlds, and how it allows a more respectful development of tourism in this remote area. Hopefully this will be a good example of responsible mountain tourism in a near future.
