Au même titre que « Bon Voyage » ou encore « Tribe », « Crown Royale » demeure une des voies de trad les plus difficiles d’Europe. Nichée dans le Profile Wall de Jossingfjord en Norvège, cette ligne libérée par Pete Whittaker en 2023 et proposée 9a empile les difficultés de deux 8c trad, avant une fin plus conti en 7c, pour une centaine de mètres en fissure dans un mur déversant à 25°. Le polyvalent slovène Jernej Kruder vient de réaliser la seconde ascension de la voie de manière assez inattendue à son dernier jour sur place, après une séjour de 2 semaines. Voici ce qu’il en pense.
« J’avais l’intention d’aller voir « Crown Royale » pour voir si c’était possible dans le futur. Après avoir réussi la première partie assez rapidement, je me suis concentré sur la partie supérieure. Tout d’abord, j’ai essayé avec les protections en place, en pensant seulement faire un bon essai après travail avant de partir. 2 jours avant de quitter les lieux, j’ai fait mes 3 premières tentatives en tête, mais les conditions n’étaient pas terribles. Malgré tout, j’étais content de faire la voie en 3 parties.
Le dernier jour, je me suis réveillé très endolori et fatigué. Il y avait même une légère pluie à l’extérieur, ce qui était aussi la raison pour laquelle j’avais mis toute mon énergie le jour précédent. Néanmoins, je suis retourné là-haut pour récupérer mon matériel. La pluie s’est arrêtée et la brise m’a poussé à recommencer. J’ai eu du mal à re-gravir la première partie. Mon corps était fatigué et mon esprit sur le point d’abandonner. Un bon repos et une bonne brise froide m’ont redonné de la motivation. Plus je montais, mieux je me sentais. Je n’ai pas trop réfléchi au placement de mon matériel, je me suis juste concentré sur les mouvements.
À ce moment-là, j’ai atteint le rebord en haut du mur. La corde me faisait un tirage monstre et j’ai dû me désencorder pour finir. Mon corps était épuisé, mais mon esprit était en paix. Avec précaution, j’ai escaladé le mur du haut et crié au sommet. Quel moment !

Like “Bon Voyage” and ‘Tribe’, “Crown Royale” remains one of Europe’s most difficult trad routes. Nestled in the Profile Wall of Jossingfjord in Norway, this line, freed by Pete Whittaker in 2023, is a proposed 9a that stacks up the difficulties of two 8c trad climbs, before a more pumpy ending in 7c, for a hundred meters or so of cracks on an overhanging wall at 25°. Slovenian all-rounder Jernej Kruder has just completed the second ascent of the route, quite unexpectedly, on his last day there after a 2-week stay. Here’s what he had to say about it.
« My plan was to check out the crown to see if it would be possible in the future. After sending the first part quite fast, I put all my focus on the upper part. First, I was trying it with a pre-placed gear, and all I wanted was a good red point try before leaving.
2 days before leaving, I had my first 3 goes on proper lead, but the conditions were terrible. Still, I was happy to do it in 3 parts.
On my last day, I woke up super sore and tired. There was even slight rain outside, which was also the reason I put all my energy into a day before. Nevertheless, I went back up there to collect my gear. It stopped raining, and the breeze pushed me into another go. I was struggling hard to get over the first part. My body was tired, and my mind was close to giving up. A good rest and a nice cold breeze brought back my motivation. The higher I was getter, the more I was in the zone. Didn’t think too much about my gear placements, just pure focus on the movements.
At that point, I reached the edge of the wall. Rope drag was real, and I had to untie at this point. My body was exhausted, but my mind was in peace. Carefully, I climbed out the wall and screamed on the top. What a moment.
