Très discret et talentueux, le grimpeur pyrénéen Thibault Lair est toujours actif en falaise malgré un emploi du temps très chargé dû à son travail de charpentier. Il vient de réaliser son projet hivernal vieux de 4 ans avec une répétition de “Papichulo” 9a+ à Oliana. Il devient le 4ème français après Seb Bouin, Mathieu Bouyoud et Lucien Martinez à cocher cette voie mythique de Catalogne équipée par Chris Sharma himself pour son premier 9a+. Voici le retour de Thibault.
“Je suis vraiment content d’avoir enchaîné cette king line, une voie mythique en 9a+. J’ai commencé à essayer Papichulo il y a 4 ans je crois. Depuis, j’y suis quasiment retourné tous les ans mais pas vraiment régulièrement et quand j’étais proche de faire la voie, il y avait toujours quelque chose qui m’empêchait de revenir sur place et de “finir le travail”. Difficile de dire le nombre d’essais mais beaucoup… C’est la voie qui m’a demandé le plus de travail, et assez largement.
Pour décrire la voie, on a une première partie qui est plutôt pénible car il faut faire un socle, clipper 3 dégaines au-dessus et redescendre s’asseoir sur le socle. Cette partie doit être aux alentours 8b+. Là , il faut récupérer totalement avant d’attaquer le “vrai 9a+”. Après le socle on a 20 mouvements en 8c+ avec des sections plutôt bloc. Là, on a un repos vraiment pas très bon où il faut réussir à se relâcher un maximum car on arrive bien entamé avant d’attaquer une section d’environ 7A bloc qui nous mène à un repos plutôt bon. Et pour finir il reste 15/20m en 8b/+ très physique qui m’a coûté 2 essais et où la gestion mentale est vraiment très dure.
J’ai commencé à m’entraîner avec Patxi Usobiaga depuis 3 mois et je sens que j’ai gagné énormément en force depuis. Le travail paye et ce n’est que le début j’espère ! Quasiment toutes les voies que j’ai réalisées en 8c+ et 9a sont des premières ascensions que j’ai travaillées seul. Certaines ont été répétées mais très peu et j’avais vraiment envie de faire une voie “référence” dans le 9ème degré. Maintenant c’est chose faite ! Je tiens à remercier toutes les personnes qui ont nettoyé et rééquipé la falaise, sans qui la grimpe à Oliana serait impossible à ce jour.”

Discreet and talented, Pyrenean climber Thibault Lair is very active on the crags despite a very busy schedule due to his work as a carpenter. He just completed his 4-year winter project with a repeat of “Papichulo” 9a+ in Oliana. He becomes the 4th Frenchman after Seb Bouin, Mathieu Bouyoud and Lucien Martinez to tick this mythical route of Catalunya bolted by Chris Sharma himself for his first 9a+. Here is the Thibault‘s feedback.
“I’m really happy to have done this king line, a mythical route in 9a+. I started trying Papichulo 4 years ago I think. Since then, I’ve been back almost every year but not really regularly and when I was close to doing the route, there was always something that kept me from coming back to Oliana and “finishing the job”. Hard to say how many tries, but a lot… That’s the route that required the most work out of me, by a mile.
To describe the route, we have a first part which is rather painful because you have to pass a first overhang, clip 3 quickdraws above and come back down to sit on the base. This part should be around 8b+. There, you have to recover completely before starting the “real 9a+”. After the base we have 20 moves in 8c+ with rather bouldery sections. Then, we have a really not very good rest where we have to manage to relax as much as possible because we arrive pumped before attacking a section about 7A leading to a rather good rest. And to finish, there remains 15/20m in 8b/+, very physical and which cost me 2 tries, where managing mental expectations is very hard.
I started training with Patxi Usobiaga 3 months ago and I feel that I have gained a lot of strength in that time. Hard work pays off and this is just the beginning I hope! Almost all the routes I’ve done in the 8c+ and 9a range are first ascents that I’ve done alone. Some were repeated but very few and I really wanted to do a “benchmark” route in the 9th degree. Now it’s done! I would like to thank all the people who cleaned and re-bolted the crag without which climbing in Oliana would be impossible today.”
