À son dernier jour sur place et 4ème essai du jour, la grimpeuse britannique Hazel Findlay réussit sur le fil son super-projet de l’automne à Vernal Falls au Yosemite avec une répétition de “Magic Line”. Cette pure fissure de 35 mètres a été ouverte par Ron Kauk en 1996 avec les protections en place. 20 ans après, son fils Lonnie réalisa la première répétition de cette voie très technique avec les protections en place comme Ron. Lonnie réalisera la voie en posant les protections l’automne dernier. C’est à cette époque qu’Hazel s’est intéressée à la voie et a décidé d’en faire un objectif pour 2019. Après un entraînement estival intense, deux chutes proches du but et avoir cassé une prise clé, la grimpeuse anglaise vient de réaliser son rêve juste avant de quitter les lieux, en posant aussi ses coinceurs dans la pure éthique british ! On ne peut pas souhaiter de meilleur happy end ! Âgée de 30 ans, Hazel a déjà plusieurs réalisations notables à son actif et semble au sommet de son Art : première femme à gravir du E9 (“Once upon a time in the South-West” en 2011) au pays, 8c en escalade sportive (“Mind control” à Oliana en 2017) et 4 grandes-voies en libre à El Capitan (dont notamment “Salathé wall” en 2017). Impressionnante liste ! Évidemment, cette ascension de “Magic Line” est l’une des plus difficiles jamais réussies par une fille en trad, au même titre que son idole Beth Rodden avec “Meltdown” en 2008, toujours au Yosemite — son projet 2020 ? À noter pour la petite histoire que c’est Babsi Zangerl qui assurait Hazel lors de sa croix, ce qui pourrait aussi lui donner des idées pour le futur !

At her last day here and her 4th try of the day, British top climber Hazel Findlay crushed her Fall super-project with a repeat of “Magic Line”! This pure 35 meters crack located in Vernal Falls was first ascended by local legend Ron Kauk in 1996 with the gear pre-placed. 20 years after his son Lonnie did the first repeat of this technical gem in the same style of his father before combing back last Fall, putting the gear on place during his another free climb. At this period, Hazel joined him and started to attempt the line. Very pscyched, she decided to set the goal to free climb it in 2019. After a huge summer training, some key holds broken, intense battle with 2 falls close to the success Hazel could finally finish the job and accomplish her dream! She climbed also the route placing the gear during the send. Aged 30, the British top climber seems at the top of her Art, with numerous achievements like the first female E9 (“Once upon a time in the South-West” in 2011) au pays, 8c in sportclimbing (“Mind control”, Oliana in 2017) and 4 multi-pitch free ascents on El Cap (the last one was “Salathé wall” in 2017). Impressive list!
Obviously this repeat of “Magic Line” is one of the hardest trad ascents ever realized by a woman, like “Metltdown” by Hazel’s idol Beth Rodden in Yosemite in 2008. Her project for 2020?
