Sindre Saether réussit Chilam Balam 9a+/b – Sindre Saether climbs Chilam Balam 9a+/b

  • 02/12/2019

Talented climber from Norway Sindre Sæther just climbed his long time project, the stamina monster “Chilam balam” (9a+/b, 80 meters, 235 moves) in Villanueva Del Rosario cave, Spain. Sindre had been back here for a month and just finished a long process started in November 2017 with Henning Wang, another strong Norwegian climber. In total, he spent 85 days (!) in the route, counting the days of work and of send of easier exit variats. Before clipping the anchor, he climbed 35 times the 8c+ first part and felt 15 times at the last route’s bolt! The route has also gotten a bit harder since the last ascent, with some hold breaks, the most important one being the foothold in the crux: it went from a small spike to a smear, making the already insecure move to the pocket even more insecure. An epic ending for Sindre, forced to fight and to hold tiny holds with his 80 kgs after a 75 meters marathon! The definition of self-denial! It’s the 6th climber to clip the anchor of this beast after Bernabe Fernandez, Adam Ondra, Seb Bouin, Dani Andrada and Edu Marin. Like Magnus Midtboe, Sindre is one of the most experimented Norwegian climber. He has a all-rounder profile, able to climb 9a (“Fabela pa la enmienda” in Santa Linya), very good in trad climbing (first ascent of “Arch wall”, 37 pitches) and in big wall (“Golden gate” in El Cap). And now “Chilam balam” as a huge achievement!
