Pendant que nous nettoyions Apremont, il s’est passé pas mal de choses dans ce week-end pascal dans les blocs !
Le japonais Makoto Yamauchi répète le célèbre « Burden of dreams » à son deuxième séjour sur place en Finlande après un premier voyage cet automne. Curiosité : il a partagé sa séance et donc son ascension en direct sur YouTube, à l’instar de Jakob Schubert qui s’était offert B.IG aussi en live ! Voici son run ci-dessous, plein de précision et de maitrise. Un autre fait nous a marqué : Makoto a passé une partie de son début de séance à sécher le bloc qui était mouillé avec une serviette. Une pratique qui questionne et peut amener à des imitations et de la confusion. Est-ce responsable de diffuser à grand échelle sans explication un séchage artificiel de prises ? N’aurait-il pas fallu être patient et attendre que le bloc sèche naturellement ? L’escalade, n’est-ce pas s’adapter au rocher et non adapter le rocher à sa pratique ? Précisions que sur du granite cette pratique est sans conséquences, mais rappelons que sécher artificiellement des prises sur du grès n’est pas une bonne pratique ! Nous voulons attirer l’attention sur ce point car, s’il se fie de façon brute à l’exploit de Makoto, le néophyte ou grimpeur de salle pourrait en conclure que sécher n’importe quelle roche de façon artificielle est sans problème.
– Un autre 9A bloc répété par un grimpeur asiatique !
Le grimpeur coréen SungSu Lee avait justement répété « Burden of Dreams » il y a un an, entrainant une fausse polémique sur une touchette de t-shirt sur son premier run victorieux. C’est sans touchette vestimentaire a priori cette fois qu’il a rétabli en haut d' »Alphane » qui devient le 9A bloc le plus répété avec 7 ascensions, devant justement « Burden of Dreams » avec 6 ascensions.
– Jules Marchaland signe la perf’ tricolore avec une répétition de « Ephyra » à Chronico en Suisse. Une croix suprise, ayant une poulie inflammée et ayant réussi le bloc de manière totalement inattendue, sans avoir jamais réussi le mouvement pour attraper la pince, crux du bloc, ni la suite et le réta final. C’est le premier 8C+ bloc de Jules qui se met sérieusement au bloc, quelques mois après son remarquable flash de « Power of Now direct » 8C, en août.

– Japanese climber Makoto Yamauchi is attempting the famous “Burden of Dreams” on his second trip to Finland, following his first visit last fall. Fun fact: he streamed his session—and thus his climb—live on YouTube, just like Jakob Schubert did when he tackled B.IG live! Here’s his run below, full of precision and mastery. Another thing caught our attention: Makoto spent part of the beginning of his session drying the wet boulder with a towel. A practice that raises questions and can lead to imitation and confusion. Is it responsible to broadcast the artificial drying of holds on a large scale without explanation? Shouldn’t he have been patient and waited for the boulder to dry naturally? Isn’t climbing about adapting to the rock, rather than adapting the rock to one’s practice? Note that on granite, this practice has no consequences, but remember that artificially drying holds on sandstone is not a good practice! We want to draw attention to this point because, if they blindly follow Makoto’s feat, beginners or indoor climbers might conclude that artificially drying any rock is no problem.
– Another 9A boulder repeated by an Asian climber! Korean climber SungSu Lee had actually repeated “Burden of Dreams” a year ago, sparking a false controversy over a T-shirt brush on his first successful attempt. This time, with no apparent clothing-related incident, he topped out on “Alphane,” which has now become the most repeated 9A boulder with 7 ascents, just ahead of “Burden of Dreams” with 6 ascents.
– Jules Marchaland secures the French achievement with a repeat of “Ephyra” at Chronico in Switzerland. A surprise top-out, having an inflamed pulley and having completed the boulder in a totally unexpected way, without ever having managed the move to grab the pinch—the crux of the boulder—nor the sequence leading to the mantle. This is Jules’s first 8C+ boulder since he seriously took up bouldering, a few months after his remarkable flash of “Power of Now Direct” 8C in August.
