Germany’s Lara Neumeier doesn’t have the media profile of a Janja, Brooke or even Babsi Zangerl, and that’s clearly the media’s fault. Because the 28-year-old, whom we’ve been following for some time, sets the bar sky-high when it comes to multi-pitch routes (she bagged the Alpine trilogy this year), as well as traditional cragging. We remember her ascent of ‘Psychogramm’ in 2025, the 8b+ trad line in Austria. She was already the first woman to do it.
This time, Neumeier has made an even greater impression on the climbing community by becoming the first woman to climb the world’s first E11 route, the legendary “Rhapsody” at Dumbarton Rock, Scotland. Graded at around 8c+, the route begins with a 7a approach, followed by a long 7c+ crack, before reaching the crux – both physical and psychological: 10 unprotected meters on small crimps, and, to top it all off, a short 8A section guarding the summit.

All in all, Lara devoted two trips and 16 training sessions to climbing this route to perfection (and thus placing her own pro during the ascent, as dictated by the purest code of ethics). She had been planning to attempt it for 10 years, following Jacopo Larcher’s ascent. It is worth noting that this achievement followed hot on the heels of Buster Martin’s success and came just before that of her travelling companion, Nemuel Fuerle. She pays tribute to and credits the spirit of local camaraderie, as well as the friendly emulation amongst the projecting climbers, for this new feat by a woman.
For the record, Dave MacLeod’s first ascent took place exactly 20 years ago!
