Cela faisait 2 ans que Daniel Woods n’avait pas proposé une première ascension extrême, la dernière en date étant la première proposition en 9A bloc des US avec “Return of the Sleepwalker” à Red Rocks. Le pionnier du bloc US vient de parachever un projet démarré l’hiver dernier avec le panneau très déversant à arquées d'”Adrenaline” dans le Colorado, qu’il soumet à 8C+. Voici ce qu’il disait sur le bloc il y a quelques jours lors du travail.
“J’ai commencé à essayer le bloc en janvier 2023, quelques jours avant de décoller dans le Tessin pour aller essayer “Alphane”. Je suis revenu en avril et j’étais assez proche mais les conditions trop chaudes ont eu raison de moi. Cet hiver j’ai eu envie de le réessayer et de le plier. Le crux consiste à tenir une fente évasée que tu dois verrouiller pour aller à une arquée plate arrondie main droite. Le verrou est super douloureux et chaque essai me mâchait mon index gauche. Cela me semble confortable et tenable uniquement quand j’aie les doigts engourdis, éliminant la douleur, me permettant de tirer dessus sans réfléchir. À coup sûr le verrou le plus dur que j’aie jamais réalisé, bien qu’on ne retrouve pas souvent ce genre de préhension en bloc. Le dernier mouvement est le crux quand tu viens du bas. Tu dois défoncer cette réglette coupante quart de phalange et jeter dans une autre réglette quart de phalange. Je suis tombé 3 fois à ce mouvement depuis le début. La tolérance à la douleur est une clé de ce bloc, avec lequel j’ai un rapport amour-haine.”

It’s been 2 years since Daniel Woods proposed an extreme first ascent, the latest being the first 9A bouldering proposal in the US with “Return of the Sleepwalker” in Red Rocks. The US bouldering pioneer has just completed a project he started last winter with the very overhanging panel of “Adrenaline” in Colorado, which he is submitting at 8C+. Here’s what he had to say about the boulder a few days ago at work.
“First started trying it back in Jan. of 23. Put a few days in then before heading to Ticino to try Alphane. I returned back in April and got close before warm condis came n shut me down. Now it’s winter and prime time to try n finish it.
This line, hold selection, and movement is out there. The crux revolves around a flared slot hold which u have to ring lock and lock off to a right hand rounded quarter pad vertical edge. The lock is super painful and constantly bruises my left index finger. It only feels secure when my fingers are numb and I can’t feel it. This eliminates the pain, so I can pull thru and not think about it. Def the hardest ring lock move I have done (though we do not encounter this style of grip often in bouldering).
The last move is the next crux coming from the bottom. You have to dominate this sharp quarter pad edge and dive into another sharp quarter pad edge. I’ve fallen here 3 times now from the start. Pain tolerance is the name of the game for this one. Have a love hate relationship with it.“
