C’est fait ! Cela faisait quelques semaines que Sasha DiGiulian, Matilda Söderlund et Brette Harrington étaient aux Picos de Europa (nord-ouest de l’Espagne), dans le but d’essayer des bigs walls difficiles. DiGiulian et Söderlund viennent de réaliser un gros coup avec la seconde ascension en libre de “Rayu” 8c, 650m, situé sur la face sud de la Pena Santa de Castilla (2600m). Au programme : 15 longueurs soutenues sur un super calcaire, principalement en trad, dont une longueur clé en 8c marquée par un gros derviche. La première ascension de cette voie a été réalisée par les frères Pou et Kico Cerda il y a deux ans (vidéo de l’ouverture ci-dessous).
DiGiulian précise sur les réseaux : “On a libéré chaque longueur en alternant dans la cordée, et avec Matilda on a réalisé toutes les deux la longueur clé en tête. C’est le big wall le plus dur jamais réalisé par une cordée féminine.”

It’s done! It’s been a few weeks since Sasha DiGiulian, Matilda Söderlund and Brette Harrington arrived at the Picos de Europa, with the goal of projecting difficult big walls. DiGiulian and Söderlund just achieved a big feat with the second free ascent of “Rayu” 8c, 650m, located on the south face of the Pena Santa de Castilla (2600m). The multipitch route offers around 15 sustained pitches on a quality limestone, predominantly trad climbing, including a key pitch in the 8c range marked by a big crossover move. The first ascent of this route was made by the Pou brothers and Kico Cerda two years ago (video of the first ascent above).
Sharing the news, DiGiulian gave a few details on Instagram: “We alternated leads, freeing every pitch. Matilda and I both freed the 8c on lead. This marks the hardest graded big wall achieved by an all female team.”
