Katie Lamb, américaine, 25 ans, n’est pas une inconnue dans le monde de bloc, avec déjà une ribambelle de 8B et 8B+ bloc à son actif, comme “Jade”, “New base Line”, “Direct North” ou encore “Spectre” à Bishop cet hiver. Katie vient de frapper un grand coup avec la 4ème ascension de “Box Therapy”, un 8C+ bloc en toit ouvert en 2018 par Daniel Woods à RMNP dans le Colorado. C’est la première féminine d’un bloc de ce niveau ! Le passage propose 18 mouvements sur arquées. C’est Tommy Caldwell et son père qui ont déniché ce panneau de granite situé à 3500 mètres d’altitude : un bloc de 7 mètres de haut avec 50° de dévers ! A l’époque Tommy avait ouvert “Spread eagle” 8A et “Box Therapy” est le départ bas de ce dernier avec le crux situé dans la transition du départ debout, un mouvement typé pan Güllich et un croisé très physique. Pour Woods, du départ bas au debout le bloc vaut 8B+/C et ensuite le départ debout 8A+.
Katie s’était attelée à ce projet en juillet dernier, en mode projet unique, avec un focus intégral sur le bloc, comme elle sait si bien le faire. Voici son commentaire sur son compte Instagram.
“Une grande partie de mes progrès peut être attribuée au simple fait d’essayer. Je connais mes limites et je continue à essayer jusqu’à ce que je les atteigne. C’est un atout, mais cela peut rendre l’escalade moins amusante. Récemment, j’ai ressenti moins d’excitation, mais plus de joie.
Les pièces du puzzle se sont assemblées sur Box Therapy et rapidement, il s’agissait de faire taire mes doutes et d’appuyer sur l’interrupteur. C’est un état d’esprit qui se nourrit autant des journées passées dehors à se défouler que des journées passées seule en montagne. J’ai passé du temps en juillet à marcher jusqu’à cette prairie pour essayer de progresser, et je suis assez contente de ce que ça a donné.”
Un exploit historique puisque jusqu’alors seules Ashima Shiraishi avec “Horizon”, Kaddi Lehmann avec “Kryptos”, Mishka Ishi avec “Biaku-dou” et Oriane Bertone avec “Satan Y l’helvete assis” avaient annoncé du 8C. Bravo !

Katie Lamb, 25, is no stranger to the bouldering world, with tons of 8B and 8B+ boulders to her credit, including “Jade”, “New base Line”, “Direct North” and “Spectre” at Bishop again this winter. Katie just achieved a big dream with the 4th ascent of “Box Therapy”, an 8C+ roof boulder opened in 2018 by Daniel Woods at RMNP in Colorado for the first female on a boulder of this grade!
The problem offers 18 moves on crimps. It’s Tommy Calwell and his father who found this granite monster, 20 feet high with 50° overhang at elevation 10500 feet! Tommy just set a stand start of the problem, “Spread eagle” V11 and “Box Therapy” is the low start of this one, with a crux coming in the transition to the start, offering an hard campus move sequence and a front lever cross. For Woods, it’s a V14-15 problem into th stand which he grades V12.
Katie started this project last July, in single-project mode, with an integral focus on the boulder, as she knows so well how to do. Here’s her comment from her Instagram account.
“A lot of my progress can be attributed to just showing up. I know where I can be and keep coming back until I get there. It’s an asset, but can make climbing less fun. Recently I’ve been feeling less excitement, but more joy.
The pieces fit together on Box and quickly it was about silencing my doubts and flipping the switch. It’s a headspace fed as much by days outside shooting the shit as by days alone in the mountains. I spent some time in July walking up to this meadow trying to fill my cup, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.“
An historical feat, because until this day only Ashima Shiraishi with “Horizon”, Kaddi Lehmann with “Kryptos”, Mishka Ishi with “Biaku-dou” and Oriane Bertone with “Satan y helvete sit” claimed 8C/V15. Congratulations!
