Loïc Zehani propose Brooklyn 9b – Loïc Zehani claims Brooklyn 9b

  • 17/03/2023

We knew he was in good shape, recently announcing a repeat of “Aubade direct” 9a+ at La Sainte-Victoire (4th ascent after Pouvreau, Oddo and Bosio), and now Loïc Zehani hammers the point home by freeing a new extreme route at Orgon Canal and proposing 9b. It’s the 3rd 9b claimed by Loïc in the area after “Obsession” in 2019 and “Harlem” last year. Like this latest first ascent, “Brooklyn” is a combination around the famous “Bronx” (first 8c+ in France, François Petit, 1994) with a new independent start. Here is the description given by Loïc.

“Two years ago my father bolted a route between “Macumba Club” and “Bronx”. It is about twenty natural moves (in the meantime a crimp broke and we had to glue another hold because it was impossible to climb without it). This start joins the central rest of “Bronx” then it ends with the “Connection” (“Macumba”). The beginning is really hard, in particular a small crimp to hold in order to get a bad gaston. It took me a few sessions to succeed in this move, then a few other sessions to make good links, and a few others to succeed on the route. To summarise: 3 wide approach moves then a hard section of 6 moves (around 8A + boulder) then 7 physical moves (approximately 7C+ boulder). We then get to the rest of “Bronx” (well pumped!) then there remain about thirty very resistant moves with the connection and the exit of “Macumba” (~ 8b+). Last Sunday I succeeded in the route from the second bolt, so I only needed to go do it from the ground. It’s now a done thing, with great conditions this lunch time. This route is really insane and almost natural. I propose 9b, if it can motivate some…”
