“Plus dur que tous les 9a+ que j’ai réalisés“, c’est avec ces mots que Tanguy Merard a qualifié la difficulté de la première ascension qu’il vient de réaliser sur le site Grenoblois de l’Abattoir avec “Hannigraal”, proposé 9b, une voie équipée par Florent Plaze qui deviendrait la voie la plus dure de la cuvette. La voie est une extension du 9a “Hannidalle tracteur”, qui se conclut par les difficultés de “La cinquantaine éclatante” 9a+, une voie que Tanguy avait aussi réussi à libérer la semaine passée. Il nous en dit plus.
– Tu as l’air de te faire plaisir à l’Abattoir, ta nouvelle falaise de prédilection ?
J’ai découvert la falaise l’an dernier, j’y suis allé deux fois, quand je suis arrivé à Grenoble. J’avais essayé “Hannidalle tracteur”, 9a. J’avais pas eu l’occasion d’y retourner, j’avais pas fait trop de falaise dans le coin.
– Tu essayais depuis longtemps cette voie où c’était un peu improvisé ? Comment en as-tu entendu parler ?
Là j’y suis retourné car Seb Berthe essayait le 9a et l’extension et m’a proposé d’essayer car c’est juste à côté de chez moi. Vu que j’avais déjà essayé, je me suis dit que ce serait cool d’y retourner. La première fois que j’y suis retourné c’était il y a 3 semaines, j’ai ensuite réalisé 6 séances espacées sur 2 semaines pour faire plein de voies, qui ont des parties communes, “Hannidalle tracteur” en 9a, puis “La cinquantaine éclatante” le 9a+, “Brouncha” le 9a, et enfin le 9b.
– Peux-tu décrire “Hannigraal” ? A quoi cela ressemble ?
Le style j’adore ! J’avais déjà grimpé à Mouriès chez moi dans le Sud et c’est un peu similaire. Le rocher est vraiment exceptionnel, avec de magnifiques arquées. Cela commence avec “Hannidalle tracteur”, à la fois assez bloc mais rési : plein de pas de blocs d’affilée sans trop de repos avec une fin rési. S’ensuit une décontraction pas terrible sur des arquées plates, et quand tu repars du relais du 9a tu fais un 7C+ bloc très à doigts, avec un réta dans la dalle, où tu peux souffler un peu avant un jeté latéral à 2 mains sur l’arête de la falaise, vraiment classe. Le crux du coup est là haut, c’est de passer dans la dalle.
– Définitivement ta voie la plus dure ?
Comparé aux autres 9a+ que j’ai faits, c’est plus dur et aussi davantage dans mon style. Quand je l’ai fait tout était parfait. Il y avait les condis, j’étais en forme, j’étais calé et c’est assez dans mon style. Je pense vraiment que c’est la plus dure.
– Tes prochains projets pour la période estivale ?
J’en ai pas mal : retourner à Entraygues dans mon projet “Le pamphlet”, retourner à Céüse pour “Ratstaman Vibrations” et dans le Verdon pour “La rage d’Adam”. Voici mes 3 gros projets principaux pour cet été. Et ensuite faire des projets aux alentours, comme par exemple “Le braille” à côté de chez moi, du bloc en Suisse, etc…

The route is an extension of the 9a “hannidalle tracteur”, before proposing all the difficulties of “La cinquantaine éclatante” 9a+, a route that Tanguy also managed to free last week. He tells us more…
– Do you seem to be taking good time at l’Abattoir, your new favorite crag?
I discovered the crag last year, I went there twice when I first moved to Grenoble. Ibtried “Hannidalle tracteur”, 9a. I hadn’t had a chance to go back, as I hadn’t done too many sessions in the area.
– Had you been trying this route for a long time, or was it a bit improvised? How did you hear about it?
I went back there because Seb Berthe was trying the 9a and the extension and suggested I give it a try because it’s right by my house. Since I’d already tried it, I thought it would be cool to go back. The first time I went back was 3 weeks ago, then I did 6 sessions spaced out over 2 weeks for climbing a lots of routes, which have common parts, “Hannidalle tracteur” in 9a, then “La cinquantaine éclatante” the 9a+, “Brouncha” the 9a, and finally the 9b.
– Can you describe “Hannigraal”? What does it look like?
I love the style! I’d already climbed Mouriès back home in the South and it’s a bit similar. The rock is really exceptional, with magnificent crimps. It starts with “Hannidalle tracteur”, which is quite bouldery but at the same time resistant: lots of bouldering cruxs in a row without too much rest, with a resistant finish. This is followed by a not-so-great kind of rest on flat crimps, and when you leave the 9a anchor you climb a 7C+ boulder very fingery, with a mantle in the slab, where you can breathe a little before a 2-handed lateral dyno on the cliff arete, really classy. The crux of the route is at the top, to pass through the slab.
– Definitely your hardest route?
Compared to the other 9a+ I’ve done, it’s harder and also more in my style. When I did it, everything was perfect. I catched the conditions, I was in shape, my betas went precise and it’s pretty much in my style. I really think that’s the hardest route I climbed.
– What about your next projects for the summer?
I’ve got quite a few: going back to Entraygues for my project “Le pamphlet”, going back to Céüse for “Ratstaman Vibrations” and in Verdon for “La rage d’Adam”. These are my 3 main projects for this summer. And then I’ll be doing some projects in the surrounding area, such as “Le braille” near my home, bouldering in Switzerland, etc…
