Makatea : une nouvelle destination grimpe est née ! – Makatea: a new climbing destination is born!

  • 09/08/2019

Guillaume Vallot, (topo d’escalade), France

Hauteur ? niveau ? grandes voies ?
On a ouvert 60 voies environ cf topo joint ci-dessous.
Makatea from Charlotte Durif – Photo: Charlotte Durif

ENGLISH VERSION

With the Maewan association – sailboat which is navigating around the world since 2014 – the numerous crags of Makatea island have been recently developed in French Polynesia, with the first climbing event in this country! Makatea is a raised atoll of coral origin a day’s boat north-east of Tahiti. The other side of the world…Focus on this expedition!

The birth of the project
Erwann Le Lann, French mountain guide, skipper, ex-organizer of Petzl Roc Trip went last Oktober to Makatea for highlining. With Marion Courtois, Maewan association president, Nathan Paulin, Antony Newton and Bertrand Delapierre they met the mayor of the village, the teacher of the school and the local climbing association president. Then came a project of development of an eco-friendly and outdoor tourism on the island with the bolting of the incredible crags which are making the tour, more than 16 kilometers of circumference! Back in France for Christmas, Marion and Erwan work on this project and propose to Nina Caprez to join and to build a climbers, mountain guides, photographers, rescuers team for a bolting expedition during all June. An important point is to imply all the local people around to an eco-tourism turned on outdoor sports. A specific subject is touched on accident, injuries and traumas. Indeed the island is inhabited by about 80 people and is located a day sailing from Tahiti.

Climbing was at its beginning on the island with the creation of a local association, Makatea climbing, learning how to bolt with a works at height society based in Tahiti, Acropol. First 50 initiation routes have been bolted. What motivate Maewan to take part.

Talk with Nina Caprez about Makatea

  • Who is running the climbing development on the island during this month of June ?
It was a team effort ! The vibe from the Makatea locals and Heitapu the climbing association president was huge. The Maewan team and the Acropol society joined and at the end all the locals joined their efforts.
  • How was the welcoming ? A word about the local association ?
We hardly prepare this month since January . The idea was from the local climbing association. We were very well received. The infrastructures were simple, we did bush camping on 2 different places. We made the tour of the island, with the bolted routes and all the virgin rock for the huge potential. We shared some climbing sessions with some climbers of the local association and we initiate 12 pupils of the school to climbing.
  • Who was in the Maewan team ?
Erwan and me built a pure fanatic bolting team, all with an adventure and discovering spirit
    Marcos Costa, Brasil
    Mike Schreiber, Germany
    Bernd Schlögl, Austria
    Aymeric Clouet, France
    Charlotte Durif, France
    Solène Piret, France
    Jonathan Siegrist, USA
    Joseph Grierson, Australia
Then other persons worked on the project in different ways :
    Olivier Testa (speleo) France
    Guillaume Vallot (climbing topo) France

From the Maewan team, Marion Courtois was charged to organize the environement workshops with the children of the island. She was supported by Gorka Oyarzun from Water Family, partner association of Maewan. Lise Morel has hosted the social media during a month with internet connexion only between 2 and 4 am!
The media team was composed by Guillaume Broust, Julien Nadiras, Patricia Oudit and Jimmy Martinello.

  • How was the plan ?
More than a climbing expedition, Maketea Vertical Adventure was the case to gather all the population around all the sport activities in the island for a long developement.
We organized some organization meetings regularly. At the beginning, it was difficult. The link was to arrive to interest the children with dailies workshops and games, and they arrived to convince their parents.

On the climbing side, the team was not very big the 10 first days. We camped close to the port and we bolted close to this place because it was a big meeting point in the island. When the rest of the crew joined, we changed our camp on the other side, at the place decided for the event at the end of the month. At this moment we started the topography of the cave with Olivier. The idea was to develop 2 sites, for a discovering of climbing in a touristic way but also for having the nicest lines of the cliff in all grades. We helped to the build of the camp for the event and we knocked down hundred of coconuts for having a safe place.
  • What do the cliffs look like?
On the port side, the limestone and the routes look like the rock you can find in Greece : lot of tufas, columns,…Very classical in my opinion. The other side of the island proposes an amazing and extraordinary rock. Some grey walls, very smooth with perfect holes and friendly cracks. Some high and vertical faces and a sector with a start in a cave. All of this just up to the sea in a very compact rock in the shade the afternoon. The paradise !
  • How many routes have been bolted?
Around 60 routes, consult the guidebook up in the french version.
Photo : Erwan Le Lann
  • What about the king lines ? The best routes?
I opened a 7c in the Maewan sector and I found it very nice, then a nice 8a from Marcos and Aymeric « Papatee ». But all the lines were cool to climb. In this marine environment the quality of the bolts was important and despite the support of Petzl society, the budget was enormous. We opened the most obvious lines and we cleaned them a lot.
  • Bolting from the top or from the ground?
80% of the routes were bolting from the ground. It was fun for everybody ! And with the hooks, friends and removable bolts, i twas a nice experience.
  • A word about the climbing festival with the local people at the end of June ?
It was incredible! I didn’t expected a thing like this! 200 people participating, coming by boat from Tahiti. Most of them were Tahitians or living in the islands around, few tourists,… Their motivation was to take part to this singular experience on this little island, the discovering of all activities that we shared and to enjoy to be in the nature. We proposed to them 7 diffrent workshops with 2 climbing places, speleo, via ferrata, hiking to an old phosphat mine, 200 meters zip line and a 80 meters abseil.
  • A word about the traverse of the island climbing by the cliffs ?
Erwan and Aymeric did the middle of the North traverse of the island. I think i twas a nice adventure !
  • Which were the other outdoor activities you developed?
Speleo, diving in the sea and in pure water caves, coconut crab hunting, picking, opening and extracting milk and oil from coconuts, fishing,…
  • What the memory you will keep from this travel?
I believed I was Robinson Crusoe, all time serving climbing. We had no phone connections, no wifi so we enjoyed a lot the present moments. We discovered an other nature, we spoke a lot, laughed a lot, played a lot, cooked together,…Life was easy in this small size and simple place. One thing I will remember was the simplicity to dive with sharks, turtles and fishs of all colours. And the rock quality, the all size and all colours crabs, the kindness of the local people and the infinite love coming from their kids.

The Maewan assocation wants to thank all the partners of this project : Ball Watch Compagny / Municipalité des Carroz d’Araches / Arc’teryx / Petzl / Club d’Escalade de Mulhouse / Julbo / MSR / Cegelec Polynésie / Tahiti Tourisme / Gouvernement Polynésien.
