C’est une histoire spéciale entre Emily Harrington et “Golden Gate”.
En 2015, la talentueuse falaisiste américaine réalisait la mythique grande-voie d’El Cap en libre au prix d’un combat de 6 jours en paroi (cf vidéo ci-dessous).

Automne 2019, Emily se frotte à nouveau à ce big wall de 1000 mètres proposant 4 longueurs en 7c+. Son objectif : réaliser “Golden Gate” cette fois dans la journée. Malheureusement Emily se blesse suite à une chute lors d’une tentative. Verdict : une brûlure à la nuque, et une contusion au coude et à la jambe. Fin de l’aventure cette année-là.

Mardi dernier. Emily Harrington fait une tentative dans la voie accompagnée de son compagnon Adrian Ballanger et d’Alex Honnold en personne. Démarrage dans la nuit (1h30 du mat’) et finissant aussi dans l’obscurité : la voie est cette fois réalisée en 21h13 minutes, non sans frayeur encore ! Dans une des longueurs clé, “The Golden Desert pitch”, Emily a zippé de manière assez inattendue et a effectué une chute latérale, se cognant la tête sur un ressaut et s’entaillant le crâne malgré le casque. “Cela ressemblait à une blessure par balle, le sang giclait partout”. Après être redescendue au relais du dessous, s’être fait checkée les fonctions vitales et stoppé le saignement avec un bandage, Emily a pu reprendre l’ascension et finir la voie. Elle devient la 4ème fille en haut d’EL Cap dans la journée après Lynn Hill (Le “Nose”), Mayan Smith-Gobat et Steph Davis (“Freerider”).

It’s a special story between American pro climber Emily Harrington and “Golden Gate”. In 2015, Emily free climbed this iconic El Cap classic in Yosemite after 6 days on the wall (watch the video below).
Last fall, Emily projected to free climb the big wall in a day, a difficult challenge: 1000 meters of climbing, and four 5.13 pitches… During an attempt, Emily get injured after a fall. Her neck and her elbow suffered and she needed rescue and gave up her project.
Last Tuesday, Emily finally did a succesful attempt joined by her boyfriend Adrian Ballanger and Alex Honnold himself. She started to climb in the night (at 1.30 am) and completed the route after 21h 13 min of climbing, with again some spices. Emily slipped unexpectly during a key pitch (“The Golden desert pitch”) with a sideways fall, and her head hit a piece of rock.
“It looked like a gunshot wound. Blood was spurting everywhere,” she says. After lowering down at the belay anchor, checking her vitals and cleaning up the blood she could continue and achieve her dream. She became the 4th woman to climb EL Cap in a day after Lynn Hill (“The Nose”), Mayan Smith-Gobat and Steph Davis (“Freerider”).
