Présente sur une partie de la tournée Reel Rock US pour “Burning the Flame”, Babsi Zangerl en a profité pour refaire un saut à Red River Gorge, 10 ans après sa dernière visite des lieux. Accompagnée de la grimpeuse allemande Lara Neumeier, Babsi s’est offert une bonne tranche d’escalade sportive, avec évidemment quelques belles réalisations que nous lui avons demandé de commenter.
D’abord direction la Chocolate Factory où Babsi a répété la classique “Pure Imagination” (8c+), peut-être la voie la plus célèbre des lieux.
“Pure imagination est une ligne incroyable. Il n’y a que des lignes 5 étoiles dans ce mur de la Chocolate Factory. Une voie de rêve, je dirais. “Pure imagination” a un crux très bloc à la 4ème dégaine qui te mâche beaucoup de peau. Après tu as un long chemin à faire sur petites prises. Pour moi le crux était davantage un gros blocage dans la partie haute de la voie. C’est assez dévers, ce qui fait que c’est assez rési.”
Direction ensuite les gros dévers de Bob Marley où sa camarade Lara travaille “Southern Smoke” (8c+), Babsi jette quant à elle son dévolu sur “50 words of pump” (8c), une ligne libérée par Mike Fuselier au Roc Trip 2007.
“Bob Marley est pour sûr plus cool pour les doigts. Tu as des plus grosses prises et dans le même temps c’est assez dévers et athlétique comme escalade. “50 words” a un crux au départ et ensuite tu dois te battre pétée jusque tout en haut. Ce sont plutôt des prises plates avec des genoux astucieux à trouver. Complètement différent de “Pure Imagination”, mais une méga ligne aussi. Sur ce secteur je n’ai pas essayé “Southern Smoke”, j’ai juste fait “Ultra Perm” sur la droite qui est aussi une voie fantastique.”
Enfin Babsi est sortie des sentiers battus, avec une ascension de “The Tube” (8b+).
“J’ai vu des photos de “The Tube” et j’ai été fascinée de comment cela semblait cool. Du coup c’était une ligne que je voulais trouver et essayer. Joe Kinder m’a envoyé le point GPS pour la trouver. Mais le premier jour on est arrivés sur le plateau et on a pas trouvé le mur. On a réalisé un deuxième essai depuis le bas de cette vallée, et finalement on l’a trouvé. Cette voie est différente de ce que nous avons essayé dans le Red. C’est une escalade très technique. Au premier coup il m’a fallu un moment avant d’atteindre le relais. C’était sale et les points sont espacés. A mon 2ème essai j’ai eu besoin de la nettoyer correctement et de comprendre les parties les plus compliquées. Ensuite j’étais prête à faire un essai. Une des meilleures voies que j’ai grimpé.

Present on part of the Reel Rock US tour for “Burning the Flame”, Babsi Zangerl took the opportunity to jump to Red River Gorge. A second visit here after a first trip 10 years ago. Joined by German climber Lara Neumeier, Babsi switch with a bit of sport climbing, with obviously some nice sends that we asked her to comment.
First Babsi ticked famous extreme line of the area, “Pure Imagination” (8c+).
“Pure imagination is an amazing line. There are only five star lines on this wall at chocolate factory. A dream line, I would say. Pure has a hard bouldery crux which takes a lot of skin at the 4th bolt. After you have still a long way to go on small holds. For me the crux was a reachy move on the upper part of the wall. The wall is quite steep, this makes it very pumpy.”
Then, direction to steep Bob Marley wall where Lara was working “Southern Smoke direct”. Babsi sent “50 words of pump” Roc Trip 2007 ultimate route freed by Mike Fuselier.
“Bob Marley is for sure more friendly for the fingers. You definitely have bigger holds but at the same time it is very steep and athletic climbing. 50 words has a bouldery crux at the start and after you have to fight the pump until the very top. Slopy holds and some tricky knee bars. Completely different than Pure… but a mega line as well…. I did’t try Sothern smoke… i only climbed Ultra Perm on the right which is also a fantastic climb.“
As ending, “The Tube” (8b+), a little bit of unknown…and adventure!
“I saw pictures of the Tube and was fascinated how cool it looks. So that was a line I really wanted to find and try. Joe Kinder sent me the GPS data to find it. But on the first day we got to the top of the wall and couldn’t find any climbing in that area. So we gave it another try coming from the bottom of that valley…. And finally got there…. This climb is different to everything else we have tried in the red…. It is very technical climbing… first it took me a while to reach the anchors… it was very dirty and the bolts far
apart…. Second go I needed to clean it properly and figured out the tricky parts. then I was ready to give it a try. One of the very best I have ever climbed.”
