Delphine Chenevier réalise son premier 8c à 47 ans – Delphine Chenevier, 47 years old, sends her first 8c

  • 28/04/2023

Delphine Chenevier Little Kings 8c

Delphine Chenevier, a very active and discreet Grenoble rockclimber in the early 2000s, never stopped climbing, ticking numerous routes up to 8b in the Grenoble area for more than two decades. A few months ago, this mom who works full time (director of communication) decided to project further. This fall, Delphine sent her first 8b+ with “Viande de crison” in Satan. A few days ago, Delphine climbed a second 8b+, with the powerful “Courte patte” à la Cimaïette. A few days before her 48th birthday, Delphine achieved a new feat yesterday with the success in her first 8c during an after-work session, “Little Kings” located at St-Ange, in just a few sessions. A route bolted by Quentin Chastagnier, repeated among others by Nina Caprez, and recently by Symon Welfringer.

– Can you describe the route and the process? Was it a goal to send 8c?
The route is 30 meters long. After 15m of approach in 7a range, there is 15m of resistance over about thirty movements, with a first physical section then a finger resistance end with a crux just under the anchor where you still have to hold little crimps.Beyond the grade, I’m above all very happy to continue to progress, thanks to the training with La Fabrique Verticale, and to be able to continue to challenge myself on the routes of the area.
It was not really a goal to climb an 8c because I admit that I didn’t believe it was possible. But after my two 8b+ this year, my husband Jean-Marc, La Fabrique Verticale team who have been training me for a year and the friends strongly encouraged me to try harder. It was even a friend, Christophe, who chose the route, sending me lots of photos. The route suited me well because it was finally done quickly in 5 sessions: I immediately sent the top resistance section, very fingery. On the other hand, I had troubles on the first physical part with big moves… Thanks to a beta that Symon Welfringer gave me, it worked this evening during an afterwork session.

– How many times do you climb outside per week?
It depends a lot on the schedule, the job… Let’s say that I climb/train 4 times a week: generally on weekends outside whether it’s raining or snowing, and on weekdays an “afterwork” session when it’s possible. Often quite late so at the headlamp. Otherwise training at home.

– Tell us about your training with La Fabrique Verticale.
In fact it started with an help to recover from a bad shoulder / back injury last year and then we continued together. Overall a work of strength, resistance on what I have at home: my little moonboard and my hangboard!

– Other projects in the target?
Nothing for the moment because I didn’t think it would be fast but there are plenty of routes in the Grenoble area…and I’m sure Jean-Marc will find me new ones!
