Tanguy Merard décroche Biographie – Tanguy Merard climbs Biographie (+ interview)

  • 02/05/2023

Immediate effect of global warming, summer crags are dry and in conditions much earlier in the year, and Céüse is no exception to the rule. Surfing on his form at the start of the year, the young French gun Tanguy Merard (19 years old) opens the Céüse season in April by sending his 3-year-old project with the mythical “Biographie” 9a+. He becomes the 4th French to tick this King Line of the South (out of 20 ascents) after Sylvain Millet, Enzo Oddo and Seb Bouin. We come back with Tanguy on this new feat. It’s already his 3rd 9a+ of the year after “Supercrackinette” and “Les yeux plus gros que les roubignolles”.

– Your first thoughts after clipping the anchor? Where did your mind go?
I didn’t really have a thought when I clipped the anchor, I was in the present moment, I couldn’t realize what had happened. I was in shock and very very happy.

– Have you been trying for several years? Quickly remind us of the process, the different steps, the progress?
The work process was very long (3 years) between work on the route, training, returning season after season…
In the summer of 2020, I therefore arrived in very good shape, but I had never tackled a project of this difficulty and I was very impatient to try the route. So impatient that on my second climb I was already putting some goes, so I wasn’t very ok with my plans and I hadn’t optimized the betas at all.
On my third session I fell in the upper crux, to the cross, and I fell at this movement all summer.
The following summer I couldn’t try too hard because I worked in Ailefroide in a bar/restaurant, I remember putting in good goes but not enough to pass the crux.

In 2022 I tried a lot and I fought hard from May to November, the first day of the season I passed the crux for the first time and I fell in the last movements to go to the final jug. I was so happy to move forward with the project after so many tries, we came down from the cliff with ziki, Marzu and Pelorson and we listened Jul all evening.
I went back a week later but I was no longer moving in the route, I arrived at the crux and I had no chance of continuing, it was really hard not to understand why from one day to the next I had such a gap in the route.
I went back there at the end of the summer, I climbed the crux and fell 1 move to the end. Four days later I wasn’t moving too much on the route and I fought hard until November without much success.
Just before going back this year, I was impatient but at the same time not sure of my ability to do the route because I was not in very good shape. But in the end as soon as I took one foot off the ground I was focused and I knew I could do it.

– Which king of pitfalls did you face while working on the route?
I faced several problems as the seasons progressed, the one that gave me the most problem was the fact of arriving too soft at the top crux, I couldn’t get upset to fight in the boulder section.
The first year I was physically strong but I couldn’t adapt my climbing to this new level, I wasn’t at all economical in my betas, I stupidly wasted energy.

– Which detail made the difference in your opinion?
What made the difference was having succeeded in getting me excited and having the rage to win at the top crux. I put that in place in my training this year, with the breath I managed to activate myself to be ready to give everything. I managed to reproduce exactly what I was able to do in the gym in terms of intention and excitement.

– In your opinion which kind of things is making the purity of “Biographie”?
It’s a beautiful blue line as if indicating a route, there is no hold to the right or left of the flow.
The setting is major, the rock is exceptional, the line incredible and the route has a rather exceptional width.

– How do you see your summer season?
I went directly into “Ratstaman Vibration” after “Bio”, never has a route pleased me so much and motivated me so much, I’m psyched by this 45° panel which made me dream so much in Sharma’s video.
It’s my main goal for the summer and then if I climb it I’ll go to “La rage d’Adam”.
Summer based on Céuse, vanlife and training, “vida loca” as they say!
