Voici un nouvel apport dans le débat sur les cotations : Darth Grader ! La réflexion sur la cotation est une démarche subjective et personnelle, comparée avec l’avis général mentionné dans les topos. Afin de nous éclairer dans notre choix, un nouvel outil de plus en plus utilisé au pied des falaises a vu le jour au mois de juin : Darth Grader. Ce calculateur de cotations permet de décomposer les voies que nous essayons en sections de voies (supérieures à 15 mouvements) ou de bloc (5-10 mouvements), d’y ajouter une qualité de repos afin de définir le niveau de la voie que vous venez de réaliser. Basé sur des références de niveaux en voies comme “Biographie” par exemple pour le 9a+, Darth Grader permet d’agréger le ressenti de nos sections pour proposer un niveau d’ensemble de manière la plus objective possible…

“Il existe deux biais cognitifs majeurs qui tendent à nous faire surestimer la difficulté d’une voie. La première c’est quand un itinéraire se rapproche de notre niveau maximum, notre perception de la difficulté devient exponentielle, la moindre difficulté supplémentaire semble insurmontable. La seconde est due à la charge émotionnelle que nous attachons à notre investissement pour le après-travail. Le nombre de séances nécessaires au après-travail est un bon indicateur de la cote, mais seulement si les séances se sont déroulées dans de bonnes conditions et avec les bonnes méthodes. Darth Grader est là pour vous aider à surmonter ces biais cognitifs. En divisant une voie en sections, nous ramenons chaque section dans notre zone de confort modéreé, où il est plus facile d’être objectif. Maintenant, vous pouvez estimer la difficulté de chaque section en fonction des meilleures méthodes trouvées. Alors, outil du faignant qui ote toute réflexion personnelle suite à sa croix ou réelle plus-value mathématique pour se prononcer sur un niveau, on vous laisse juger ! En tout cas il nous semble opportun de souligner qu’il vaut mieux avoir aussi un vécu en bloc afin de proposer des niveaux cohérents pour des cruxs en relation l’échelle des cotations bloc telles qu’elle a été conçue à Fontainebleau (la fameuse cotation Fb).

Here is a new addition to grade debate: Darth Grader! Darth grader calculates a route grade based on the addition of several route and boulder sections separated by rests. It can help you define the grade of the last route you climbed. The route breakdown must be done from the ground to the anchor. To be as accurate as possible, you must not forget any movement. The route sections must be superior to 15 moves and the boulder sections between 5 and 10 moves.

“The main value of this calculator is to help you propose the most objective grade possible.

There are two major cognitive biases that tend to make us overestimate the difficulty of a route. The first is when a route approaches our maximum level, our perception of the difficulty becomes exponential, the slightest additional difficulty seems insurmountable. The second is due to the emotional charge we attach to our investment for redpointing. The number of sessions required to redpoint is a good indicator of the grade, but only if the sessions were spent in good conditions and with the right betas. Darth Grader is here to help you overcome these cognitive biases. By dividing a route into sections, we bring each section back into our moderate comfort zone, where it is easier to be objective. Now, you can estimate the difficulty of each section based on the best betas found. Darth Grader takes care of calculating the total grade equivalent to this sum of sections.

So, whether it’s a tool for the lazy, who leave out any personal grade reflection following their send, or a real mathematical added value for making a judgement on a grade, we leave it to you to judge! In any case, we think it’s worth pointing out that it’s better to also have experience of bouldering, in order to propose coherent bouldering grades for cruxes in relation to the bouldering grading table as conceived at Fontainebleau (the famous Fb grading).
