Le jeune prodige américain Beckett Hsin, 16 ans, membre de l’équipe espoir des US, vient de réaliser son premier 9A bloc avec « No one mourns the wicked« , le bloc de Nathaniel Coleman à Thunder Ridge dans le Colorado. C’est la 3ème ascension du bloc qui n’est autre que la rallonge de départ de « Defying Gravity », l’esthétique panneau en 8C de Daniel Woods, proposant deux mouvements esthétiques de pan Güllich avec de beaux ballants à contrôler.
Beckett devient le plus jeune grimpeur dans le 9A bloc, lui qui avait déjà réalisé de beaux blocs durs comme « Creature of the black lagoon » 8C+ ou encore « The Game » 8C en 2023. Le processus a été fait de haut et de bas, Becket ayant contracté la maladie de Lyme, racontant avoir passé de journées de forme où il pouvait réaliser indépendamment le crux principal du bloc 4 fois sur 5 et croire à l’enchainement, et d’autres jours où il n’y arrivait plus du tout en raison de la fatigue générée par la maladie.
Concernant le, niveau Beckett affirme ne pas avoir suffisamment d’expérience de cette difficulté pour donner un avis honnête sur la cotation.
« Cependant, que ce bloc soit vraiment coté 9A ou non, j’ai le sentiment d’avoir atteint un objectif satisfaisant pour lequel j’ai travaillé ces dernières années. Je suis reconnaissant d’avoir eu l’occasion de partager cette expérience avec tant de personnes formidables. Merci à tous ceux qui m’ont soutenu au cours de ces dernières années. Je suis plus que ravi de continuer à repousser mes limites, et j’ai hâte de voir ce que l’avenir me réserve, à moi et à mon escalade ! »

A noter que Beckett a réalisé le bloc devant Daniel Woods qui a ouvert le départ debout « Defying Gravity », et il se pourrait que le maître rejoigne l’élève prochainement au sommet du bloc… A suivre !

This is the third ascent of the boulder, which is none other than the extension of “Defying Gravity,” Daniel Woods’ aesthetic 8C board offering two aesthetic campus moves with beautiful swings to control.
Beckett becomes the youngest climber to reach 9A bouldering, having already completed difficult boulders such as “Creature of the Black Lagoon” 8C+ and “The Game” 8C in 2023. The process has been a rollercoaster ride, with Becket contracting Lyme disease and recounting days when he was in good shape and could independently complete the main crux of the boulder 4 times out of 5 and believe in the send, and other days when he couldn’t do it at all due to the fatigue caused by the disease.
I personally don’t feel like I have enough experience with boulders at this difficultly to give an honest opinion on the grade. However, regardless if this thing truly is v17 or not, it does feel like a satisfying resolve to the goal that I’ve worked for the past several years.

It should be noted that Beckett completed the boulder ahead of Daniel Woods, who pioneered the stand start “Defying Gravity,” and it is possible that the master will soon join his student at the top of the boulder… To be continued!
