Babsi Zangerl est une machine. Près de deux ans après ses répétitions en libre de “Zodiac” et “Magic Mushroom”, la polyvalente grimpeuse autrichienne est de retour en forme aux US avec son compagnon Jacopo Larcher. Le plan initial était de tenter le “Nose” en libre mais les conditions météo très humides du Yosemite les ont forcés à se replier sur Bishop, où Babsi empoche “Everything is karate” 8c+/9a en trois coups de cuillère à pot au début du mois. Après cette halte couenne, le couple est retourné dans le Yosemite mais le “Nose” étiat toujours trempé, en particulier la longueur clé du “Great roof”. Ils ont donc décidé de s’essayer “Pre-Muir Wall”, 8b. La réussite est venue il y a 2 jours pour Babsie. Ce big wall de 30 longueurs, variante du “Muir Wall” d’Yvon Chouinard, avait été libéré pour la première fois en libre en 2007 par Justen Jsong et Rob Miller. En 2012 Hazel Findlay, James McHaffie et Neil Dyer ont signé la seconde en libre, avant la 3ème par l’écossais Robbie Phillips en 2016. Babsi réussit donc la 4ème ascension connue de ce big wall, marqué par des longueurs clés déroutantes en dièdre, dont la fameuse “stemming pitch” qui lui aura valu de terminer broutée des paumes de main ! C’est déjà la 4ème voie en libre de Babsi sur El Cap ,en rajoutant “EL Nino”. La suite ? Le “Nose”, “Salathé”, “Le Dawn Wall” ? L’avenir nous le dira !

Babsi Zangerl is a machine. 2 years after her free ascents of “Zodiac” and “Magic Mushroom” the Austrian all –rounder climber is back in US with her boyfriend Jacopo Larcher. The first plan was to attempt to free climb “The Nose” in Yosemite but conditions turned bad at the end of May. So the couple decided to switch into sportclimbing, with a repetition of “Everything is karate” 8c+/9a in Bishop. After this break Nose’s key pitch “The Great roof” was again wet and they gave up to attempt this line. They decided to try the “Pre-Muir wall” 8b, a variant of « Muir wall » from Yvon Chouinard. And the success came quickly for Babsi! This 30 pitches bigwall was first free climbed in 2007 by Justen Jsong and Rob Miller. In 2012 Hazel Findlay, James McHaffie and Neil Dyer took the second free ascent before Robbie Phillips for the 3rd in 2016. It’s the 4th free ascent known for this route and also Babsi’s 4th free ascent on El Cap with her repeat of “El Nino” in 2015. Impressive ! What’s next ? “The Nose “, “Salathé”, “The Dawn wall” ? Time will tell !
