Ce lundi soir (24 octobre) a eu lieu, à Prague, l’avant-première d’un film original sur Adam Ondra. “Pushing the Limits” n’est pas à confondre avec “Beyond Focus“, la série “made in Ondra” de 4 épisodes retraçant la préparation du Tchèque en vue des JO de Tokyo. “Pushing the Limits” est l’oeuvre d’un couple mordu de grimpe, Petr Záruba (co-réalisateur avec Jan Šimánek) et Alice Tabéry (productrice tchéco-française), qui a pu suivre Ondra pendant trois années et su rester fidèle à leur vision presque artistique du cinéma-en témoigne la séquence d’ouverture, longue et sans parole, avec pour seul son la respiration du grimpeur.
Loin des productions habituelles quand on pense à “film d’escalade”, celui-ci réinvente en quelque sorte le genre. Non seulement par l’attention donnée au cadrage, aux silences, mais encore par l’étoffement de Ondra-grimpeur en Ondra-fils-homme-compagnon. La présence en filigrane d’Iva Ondra trace les contours d’une relation que le réalisateur a voulu extraire de l’ombre tout en lui donnant une densité diaphane. “Pushing the Limits” veut que le spectateur fasse son propre travail d’interprétation, il ne nous mâche pas le travail.
Bien entendu, le film parle aussi de grimpe : chez lui, en salle, en compétition et souvent sur le rocher, tant on sait combien Ondra aime s’y ressourcer. Mais le Tchèque n’y parle pas escalade, il nous la montre ; ceux qui en parlent sont les autres, les présentateurs télé qui l’invitent, ses entraineurs, ses parents.
Comme “Beyond Focus“, l’horizon du film tient dans Tokyo 2021, qu’on vit de “l’intérieur”, en République Tchèque, plan fixe sur Iva et des amis pétris de silence devant les images. Mais “Pushing the Limits” pousse également celles des JO et montre comment Ondra en revient, dans tous les sens du terme, de l’intérieur encore.
Un beau film de grimpe comme on n’en voit pas. Il sort bientôt dans les salles en Tchéquie, et va faire le tour des festivals : Vancouver, Kendall, Sheffield entre autres. Nous vous tiendrons au courant d’un passage sur le territoire français, pour le moment malheureusement pas encore prévu. Par contre “Adam Ondra: Pushing the Limits” sera disponible en VOD à partir du 12 décembre.

Last Monday (24th October) saw the première of an outlier of a movie about Adam Ondra. ‘Pushing the Limits‘ is not to be confused with “Beyond Focus”, the 4-part series produced in-house by Ondra’s team and looking at his preparation for the Tokyo Olympics. ‘Pushing the Limits’ is the work of two climbing fanatics, Petr Záruba (co-director with Jan Šimánek) and Alice Tabéry (Czeco-French producer), who were able to follow Ondra for three years and stay true to their brand of somewhat artistic movie making-the opening sequence, long and devoid of words, with only Ondra’s breathing by way of a soundtrack, is telling.
Far removed from the usual production of what we know as ‘climbing film’, this one somehow reinvents the genre. Not only thanks to the extreme care given to framing and silences (very little music), but also through a multidimensionality given to Ondra, who goes from being a climber to a son, a man and a partner. The running presence of Iva Ondra draws the silhouette of a relationship that the directors wanted to put, however lightly and tastefully, more in the light. But ‘Pushing the Limits’ wants the spectator to reach their own opinion, no one is doing the work for us.
Of course, the movie also talks about climbing: at Ondra’s home, in gyms, at World Cups and often on the rocks, since we know how much the Czech needs it to refresh his mind. But Ondra doesn’t talk about it, rather he shows us; the ones talking about it are the others, the TV presenters who invite him, the coaches, his parents.
Like in ‘Beyond Focus’, Tokyo 2021 constitutes the drive and horizon behind it, but this time we experience the competition from ‘within’, in the Czech Republic, fixed frame square on Iva and her friends watching silently as Ondra battles in Japan. But ‘Pushing the Limits’ also pushes the limits of these Olympics by showing how the athlete comes back, in all the meanings of the word-from within still.
A beautiful movie like no other. It will soon be on general release in Czechia, and will be shown at various festivals worldwide: Vancouver, Kendall, Sheffield among others. We’ll keep you informed on a potential landing on our French shores, but for now nothing has been confirmed yet. However, ‘Adam Ondra: Pushing the Limits’ will be available on VOD from 12th December.
