Thanks to Benoît Regord and Albéric Lemercier, embark for Reunion Island and discover its dynamic local climbing! Twenty years after the first major developments there, the activity continues to grow and structure itself despite the hot and humid climate: 1200 routes, many actors and fanatics who continue to develop incredible sectors, young talents who perform, a unique atmosphere… Indeed, the opus mixes the portrait of local actors and the showcasing of sites as sublime as they are incredible.
Rachid Cherif and Thierry Caillaud, two of the main bolters on the island, present their latest addition, the Bras de la Plaine crag: a magnificent steep-sided gorge with routes following the river, and climbing that is both generous and technical because of its sloppy nature. In places, the climbing is done on these magnificent shapes, the famous basalt organs. Tantalising!

With Greg Sobczak, discover the Ti Sable cliff and its easy climbing on a black sand beach and its abrasive basalt-postcard stuff. Change of atmosphere with the deep gorge of La Chapelle in Cilaos with the presentation of an extreme futuristic multi-pitch project: 7 hard pitches, demanding, with extreme starting pitches that are likely well into the 9th degree!
There is something on all profiles and for all levels. Luciano Maillot, one of the main developers of rock climbing in Cilaos, shows off his latest multi-pitch at the Bras Rouge waterfall, “Friendly Diagonal” 6a, 8 pitches in a very wild, jungley setting.
Finally the last part of the film delivers a beautiful portrait of Oriane Bertone, ithe nternational hope of local climbing, who guides us from boulder to boulder in the ravines on the problems which punctuated her debut.

“Basalt Island ” offers a stylish overview of the mineral potential of the Réunion, and through the diversity of the incredible landscapes of the island’s spots, makes it possible to initiate a beautiful invitation to travel!
