Libéré des échéances compétitives car qualifié aux JO à l’issue des championnats du monde cet été, où il a d’ailleurs brillé en remportant la difficulté et le combiné, le mutant autrichien Jakob Schubert a naturellement voulu se concentrer sur ses objectifs en milieu naturel. Il est retourné depuis ce mois de septembre dans la grotte de Flatanger en Norvège pour tenter de tordre le cou à un vieux projet équipé par Adam Ondra en 2013, que les deux grimpeurs avaient essayé ensemble l’automne dernier : “Project Big”.

Depuis la réalisation de “Silence” 9c en 2018, Adam en avait fait son nouveau fil rouge norvégien. Essayée aussi par Seb Bouin cet été, avec une belle vidéo et un bel essai sous le coude, le challenge demeurait toujours invaincu malgré le pedigree impressionnant des prétendants. “Project Big” propose un marathon d’escalade sur près de 60 mètres. La voie démarre doucement par le 7a de “Kakestykket” avant de bifurquer tout droit pour les grosses difficultés avec un 8A bloc d’entrée suivi d’une longue partie en 8c, un repos chauve-souris assez mauvais sur un double genou, et le crux principal et sommital autour du 8B bloc, composé d’un grand mouvement pour attraper une pince plate depuis un rail et d’un croisé/décroisé sur une fissure en épaule avec un talon précaire, avant un final plus “facile” en 8a.

Après être tombé très haut en sortie du dernier crux lors de sa 3ème tentative ce mois de septembre, la voie vient de tomber lors de son sixième live, le 20 septembre. Voici ci-dessous la vidéo du run gagnant. Crux à 24:00 pour ceux qui se seraient fait tromper par le délayage en plein pas de bloc de l’autrichien. Jakob est même passé pas loin d’une chute après le crux avec la casse d’une prise à 28:15 !

After securing his qualification for the Olympic Games at the conclusion of this summer’s world championships, where he crushed the competition by winning both lead and combined, Austrian champion Jakob Schubert has chosen to focus his efforts on outdoor challenges. Since September, he has returned to the Flatanger cave in Norway to tackle an old project that was first equipped by Adam Ondra in 2013 – a project they both explored together last autumn, known as “Project Big.”

Since his historic ascent of “Silence” (graded 9c) in 2017, Adam has set his sights on this new Norwegian endeavour. Even with a recent attempt by Seb Bouin this summer, captured in an impressive video and marked by a commendable effort, the challenge still remained unconquered, despite the impressive ticklist of contenders. “Project Big” is a grueling climb, spanning nearly 60 meters. The route starts gently with the 7a traverse that is “Kakestykket” before veering upwards into the realm of daunting difficulties, featuring an 8A entry boulder, followed by an extensive section graded at 8c. Climbers then make the most of a challenging bat hang rest on a double kneebar, and the main summit crux is marked by an 8B boulder problem, involving a significant move to grab a flat hold on a rail and a crossover move on a shoulder crack, where a precarious heel placement is crucial, before a “relatively easy” 8a finish.

After a high fall from the last crux during his third attempt this month, success finally came on his sixth live try, on September 20th. You can watch the victorious ascent in the video linked above. Crux at 24:00 for those who may have been fooled by the Austrian’s delaying in the middle of the main boulder section. Jakob even came close to a fall after the crux, breaking a hold at 28:15!
