Grosse base physique de 17 mouvements ouverte par Shawn Raboutou dans le Colorado (Eldorado Canyon) et proposée 9A, « Megatron » demeurait non-répété. Le bloc empile un 8C bloc de 8 mouvements au surpuissant « Tron » 8B+. L’olympien Hamish McArthur, 5ème des derniers jeux de Paris, en a fait son affaire et vient d’annoncer sur les réseaux la seconde ascension du passage ! Hamish annonce avoir rétabli en haut du bloc à sa 9ème tentative de la journée après avoir franchi le crux. Une bonne journée de volume ! Déjà essayé par le gratin du bloc US (Woods, Webb, Ruana), « Megatron » a la réputation d’être une des 9A les plus difficiles de la planète !

Embarqué dans l’aventure Cap sur El Cap 2 en compagnie de Soline Kentzel et Seb Berthe, Aidan Roberts a lui aussi réalisé une belle croix sur place cet hiver. Tandis que Seb répétait le Dawn Wall fin janvier, Aidan croitait aussi avec la première répétition du bloc le plus dur du Yosemite au Camp 4, l’ultra à doigts et technique « The Dark Side » (V16/8C+) établi par Carlo Traversi en 2023 sur le mythique bloc de « Thriller ».
« La difficulté ne réside pas vraiment dans les mouvements individuels mais dans la façon dont ils s’assemblent, c’est un peu comme un puzzle stratégique amusant. » Voici comment Aidan parle de cette traversée ascendante tout en tenue de prises, tenue de pieds minuscules et valorisation de plats déversants. Pour Aidan, le dernier mouvement dur pour aller à une arquée depuis une épaule main gauche peu adhérente était vraiment le crux, avec une dimension psychologique.
Un fait d’armes de plus pour le grimpeur britannique, cette fois loin de ses bases ! On rappelle qu’Aidan a déjà trois 9A bloc à son actif, avec « Alphane » en Suisse (2022) et deux premières ascensions proposées l’an dernier, « Spots of Time » (répété par Will Bosi cet automne) et « Arrival of the Birds ».

A huge 17-moves physical prow opened by Shawn Raboutou in Colorado (Eldorado Canyon) and proposed at 9A, “Megatron” remained unrepeated. The problem stacks up an 8-moves 8C boulder to the mega physical “Tron” 8B+. Olympian Hamish McArthur, 5th at the last Paris Games, has made it his project and just claimed the second ascent of the boulder! Hamish announced that he topped out the boulder on his 9th attempt of the day after passing the crux. A crazy volume day! Already attempted by the cream of US bouldering (Woods, Webb, Ruana), “Megatron” has the reputation of being one of the toughest 9As on the planet!

Having joined Soline Kentzel and Seb Berthe on the Cap sur El Cap 2 adventure, Aidan Roberts has also bagged a great US tick this winter. While Seb was repeating the Dawn Wall at the end of January, Aidan was also sending with the first repeat of Yosemite’s hardest boulder at Camp 4, the ultra-crimpy and technical “The Dark Side” (V16/8C+) freed by Carlo Traversi in 2023 on the mythical “Thriller” boulder.
“The difficulty really is not in the individual moves, it’s how they all piece together, it’s quite like a fun strategic puzzle.” This is how Aidan talks about this upward traverse all about crimping and balancy moves on bad slopers and poor footholds. For Aidan, the last hard move from a left hand desperate gaston to a crimp was really the crux, with a psychological dimension added.
Yet another feat for the British climber, this time away from his home base! Remember Aidan already has three 9A boulders to his credit, with “Alphane” in Switzerland (2022) and two first ascents proposed last year, “Spots of Time” (repeated by Will Bosi this autumn) and “Arrival of the Birds”.
