Hazel Findlay réalise son premier 9a – Hazel Findlay climbs her first 9a

  • 11/03/2022

Hazel Findlay Esclatamasters 9a

British climber Hazel Findlay has just completed her winter project, the superb overhanging prow “Esclatamasters” 9a on the Catalan crag of Perles. This fingery stamina route is very popular with girls because already Florence Pinet, Mar Alvarez, Laura Rogora and Anak Verhoeven had also clipped the anchor. Hazel’s repeat is the 5th female ascent. Hazel had started to work the route last November and came regularly to try this winter between two training periods. She comments on Instagram:

“Alongside the physical training I really focused on having a positive mindset. I didn’t succeed everyday and it was difficult at the start of the trip when we weren’t climbing well. We also struggled to learn how to use knee pads for the lower ‘easy’ section as we have not used them before and this was frustrating. But yesterday really felt like a no-fear ascent and that became my mantra for the final section of the route. A jug marks the end of the hard climbing but you have a tricky little section at the end of the route which is totally dropable if you aren’t focused or climbing well. I knew that if fear of failure showed up too strong I’d struggle to do that part so tired. But I really focused on being connected to my experience and honestly the whole climb felt pretty joyful”

With this new feat, Hazel becomes the second Britain girl to climb 9a (Emma Twyford was the first with “Big bang”) and Hazel confirms her all-rounder skills with notable ascents in sportclimbing, tradclimbing (“Magic Line”, “Muy Caliente”) or multipitch climbing (“Salathé”, “Freerider”).
