Manon Hily répète La ligne Claire 8c+- Manon Hily ticks La Ligne Claire 8c+

We had already told you about her great achievements, Manon Hily, a talented climber from Reunion island living in Marseille, just succeeded in “La Ligne Claire”, classical 8c+ of the Praniania sector, St-Léger du Ventoux, France. We take this opportunity to ask her some questions about the work of this route and also of her next projects this year, always with “Biographie” as target.

– How long did you work this route?
I spent a few weekends in Saint-Léger last November to send “La théorie des cordes” (note: 8c). When I did it, I went to check “La ligne Claire” in order to see if it would suit me. I knew that there were already several female ascents which reassured me a little I admit. I really liked the line. I immediately understood that the effort was rather my style, quite continuous, with a lot of rest and hard sections. The only issue was that the hard sections were too fingery. It still missed an hard movement at the beginning and a clip of draw that is part of the grade of the route. Then I went to Reunion to compete in the French Cup and recharge my batteries with my family…and I injured my knee. I was in pretty good shape before this injury, it was still a bit of a blow but it’s part of the game…. So I stopped for a month and a half and started climbing again at the beginning of January. I kept this project in the back of my mind, but I knew I had to wait a bit before getting back into shape.
I had to go to Spain for this week’s vacation. But the weather forced us to stay close to home. So we went to Saint-Léger. And I felt ok going back to “La ligne Claire”. So it took me a week to do it. I spent my first two sessions mainly working the first part, the move of which I couldn’t do, as well as the clip of the draw. On the third day I was not moving too much in the starting section, which costs me a lot in terms of fingers and body tension. We had a rest day where I was asking myself a lot of questions about my ability to do this route, knowing that the crux is rather at the top of the route and that I couldn’t do it on all the goes. Then finally I quickly realized the next day that three days in a row was too much in a project and that in fact a little bit fresh it was not so complicated. From the first day after the rest I put a good try and I fell in the top crux, the same the next day. Overall every time I tried or fell there I didn’t arrive to put another good try. But finally it’s the third day where I put a first try falling up there and a second run to send. There was a great atmosphere at the crag with everyone who give everything in their projects. It was a great energy. There’s Nolwen Berthier who is quite close to do “Supercrackinette”. It’s super motivating!

– How was the progress?
So I can say that I did it quickly for the grade. It didn’t seem very hard to me. But I think you can fall a good number of times up there. I also did the crux in a different way than others I think. The original method of the crux is to hold a kind of double finger left crimp to take a slopy and slippery intermdiar and to hold a vertical trifinger-pocket . There are some others who make a mini loop to the left by taking this double crimp right hand. And I was holding the small intermediar sloper to go with the upper left two-finger pocket very tiny. So I was able to progress very quickly. I quickly adapted to the effort of route. Even if I had to transcend myself to make the start, it was so tight for me. Seems like it’s the kind of route you can do really fast or never do since the crux is still random. I was lucky not to fall after the crux which is not easy since it is very resistant.

– What will you remember from this route?
What I will remember from this route is that I knew that even if intrinsically I couldn’t often do the crux when there are rests it is still possible, so it’s a good way to choose routes harder in this style with big boulders and a rest before. For climbers who like stamina, it’s a cool route.

– Will you going back to “Biographie” this summer? What are your goals this year?
I’m thinking of going back to “Biographie” in April or May, the goal is not to get injured since because I’m going to compete. For the moment, I therefore have no rockclimbing project except “Biographie” and “La part du diable” as secondary project in Céüse as not to freak out!
