James Pearson et Caroline Ciavaldini sont rentrés en Grande Bretagne pour Noël et en ont profité pour répéter deux lignes célèbres du site de Black Rocks dans le Peak District (Angleterre). James a réalisé la 3ème ascension de “Harder Faster” (E9 7a) pendant que Caroline a réalisé la 3ème ascension féminine de la classique mitoyenne de droite, “Gaia” (E8 6c).
“Harder Faster” a été grimpée originellement par Charlie Woodburn en 2000. En 2001 Mike Weeds a réalisé un bel essai mais a chuté juste avant le “point de non retour”, une spectaculaire chute la tête en bas à la clé. L’australien Toby Benham a réalisé la seconde ascension à Noël 2003, assuré par James.
“Gaia”, la classique de Johnny Dawes (1986) a vu pas mal d’ascensions mais seulement 2 féminines : par l’américaine Lisa Rands en 2005 et par la britannique Katy Whittaker en 2013.
James commente :
“Quand j’ai assuré Toby Benham dans “Harder faster” il y a 17 ans, je ne pensais pas que j’irai un jour dedans aussi. A cette époque cela ressemblait à un itinéraire ultime de trad, très exposé avec une chute au sol potentielle qui te tendait les bras. 17 ans après, il semble étrange que maintenant, étant père, je sois assez intrigué pour aller y mettre les doigts et engager la viande. Pluie, neige et températures négatives ont mis à l’épreuve nos velléités, mais finalement, comme Toby j’ai pu trouvé la paix intérieure et la sérénité là haut sur ces plats.”
Caroline rajoute un petit mot :
“Après avoir rencontré James, la première voie en trad qui m’est apparue quand j’ai googlisé tradclimbing était “Gaia” et particulièrement cette vidéo de Jean-Minh Trin-Thieu tombant dedans et se pétant la jambe ! A ce moment j’ai pensé que le trad était stupide ! Pourtant au même moment “Gaia” est devenue une voie emblématique pour moi, et quelles qu’en soient les raisons je suis très heureuse de l’avoir réalisé aujourd’hui et de vivre par moi-même la magie très spéciale d’une escalade difficile sur le Grit.”
Les deux ascensions apparaîtront dans le film “New life” de Dark Sky Media en 2021.

On Thursday, the 24th of December 2020, James Pearson and Caroline Ciavaldini repeated two iconic testpieces at Black Rocks in the Peak District, England. James making the third ascent of “Harder Faster” (E9 7a) whilst Caroline did the third female ascent of “Gaia” (E8 6c).
“Harder Faster” was originally climbed by Charlie Woodburn back in 2000. Mike Weeks made a determined attempt at the serious testpiece a year later in 2001 but bailed out just prior to “the point of no return” and took a spectacular fall trying to reverse back down from the headwall. Toby Benham, the late Australian climber, did the second ascent on Christmas Day in 2003 and was belayed by James himself.
“Gaia”, the Johnny Dawes 1986 testpiece, has seen numerous ascents but only two from female climbers previously; American Lisa Rands in 2005 and Britain Katy Whittaker in 2013.
James reported:
“When I belayed Toby Benham (who later became known as Lucky Chance) on “Harder, Faster” 17 years ago on Christmas Day, I never thought that I’d one day be up there too. At the time it really seemed like the ultimate hard grit test piece, desperate, uncontrollable climbing with no illusions about the ground fall awaiting you! 17 years later it seems odd that now, as a father, I felt intrigued enough to go back and check it out. Rain, snow and subzero temperatures tested our commitment, but finally, it all fell into place, and just like Toby, I could feel the peace and serenity high up there on those slopers.”
Caroline commented: “After meeting James, the very first trad route that I saw when I googled trad climbing was Gaia and specifically the video of Jean-minh Trin-Thieu falling off and smashing his leg! At that moment I remember deciding that trad climbing was stupid! Still, regardless, in that same moment, Gaia became a very emblematic route for me, and whatever the reasons, I’m super happy to have had the chance to climb it today, and to experience for myself some of that real spicy magic that is hard grit.”
Both James and Caroline’s ascents will feature in the upcoming 2021 film ‘New Life’ by Dark Sky Media.
