C’est une fissure parmi les plus dures et emblématiques du Nouveau Continent qui vient d’être répétée par Babsi Zangerl. Après la première ascension par Beth Rodden il y a 15 ans, “Meltdown” (5.14c / 8c+), nichée à Upper Cascade Falls dans le Yosemite, avait seulement été répétée deux fois l’an dernier, par Carlo Traversi et Jacopo Larcher. Babsi a réussi la ligne à son 2ème séjour, environ un an après avoir essayé la voie avec son compagnon Jacopo.
“Je suis tellement heureuse d’avoir enfin réussi cette voie ! C’est une voie extraordinaire. Je pense que c’est la voie de trad la plus difficile que j’ai faite jusqu’à présent. C’était dur pour le niveau. Pour moi, c’était une vraie bataille mentale. J’ai dû réduire la pose de protections au minimum pour économiser de l’énergie car j’avais un faible pourcentage de réussite dans le crux. Il n’y avait même pas une chance sur deux que mon pied ne zippe pas sur la mini-réglette. Mon pied a glissé tellement de fois. Quand j’ai passé cette séquence difficile, j’ai su que c’était ma chance ; je devais garder la tête froide. Ce n’était pas encore fini. La partie supérieure de la voie était encore très dure, et très délicate pour placer la dernière micro-protection. J’ai failli tomber sur les deux derniers mouvements difficiles. Une ligne si emblématique et un grand merci à Beth Rodden pour l’inspiration, tu es une légende !”
La grimpeuse autrichienne en a bavé au crux, et a fait parler toute son expérience pour rajouter une ascension trad majeure à son actif en plus de “Greenspit”, “Le Voyage”, “The Path”, ou encore “Prinzip Hoffnung”…

On Saturday 28th of October, Austrian climber Barbara Zangerl repeated Beth Rodden’s ‘Meltdown’ (5.14c / 8c+) in Yosemite, California. The route, first established by Rodden in 2008, had seen only two previous repeats in the past 15 years, from Carlo Traversi and then, last year, from Babsi’s partner Jacopo Larcher. Considered to be one of the hardest single pitch trad lines in the world, Babsi’s success comes during her second visit to Yosemite to try the route, having previously worked on it in November 2022. Babsi commented:
“I am so happy that I finally sent this route!! Such an amazing line. I think it was the hardest trad line I have done so far. It felt hard for the grade. For me it was a real mental battle. I had to reduce my gear to a minimum to save some power, because to get through the crux was always a low percentage. It was not even close to 50/50 that my foot stuck on the tiny mini-edge. My foot slipped so many times. When I got past this hard sequence today I knew that it was my chance; I had to keep it together. It is still not over there. The upper part of the route was still very hard, and very tricky to place the final micro-nut. I almost fell off on the last two hard moves. Such an iconic line and big thanks to Beth Rodden for the inspiration, you are a legend!”
We understand that the Austrian climber had a hard time of it at the crux, and used all her experience to add a major trad tick to her list of achievements, in addition to ‘Greenspit’, ‘Le Voyage’, ‘The Path’, and ‘Prinzip Hoffnung’…
