Seconde ascension d’Avaatara par Victor Guillermin – Avaatara second ascent by Victor Guillermin

  • 03/05/2023

Last day, best day comme disent les anglais !”

Apparently French climbers are in good shape at the moment! Taking advantage of his spring holidays, young crack from Le Havre Victor Guillermin (17 years old) went to Lebanon to make the second ascent of “Avaatara” (9a), known as the hardest route in the Middle East located in the Baatara abyss: an overhanging route with a waterfall as background and a bewildering atmosphere due to the depth of the abyss (255 meters deep). The first ascent was made by the late David Lama in 2015.

“This route is quite short (20m), and can be divided in 3 sections: an “approach” section in 7c until total kneebar rest, then the “hard” section of around 15 movements, very bouldery with a lot of holds to compress with the pecs, which makes the route very physical and without rest possible… We could cut this section into a 7C boulder followed by an 8A boulder (in which is the main crux, a large dropknee with a toehook to an hold hard to catch very far)… Then comes the end, much easier in the 7b range, but where the holds are often wet. I first worked on the movements for 2 sessions before putting real tries, and from my first try, I fell to the crux… During the following 4 sessions, I fell to the crux 16 times in a row… I finally looked for another beta, and I found a heelhook that suited me much better during session 7. So I put in 2 goes, and both times I passed the crux and fell at the last random move of the route, a big cross with a slippery toehook… So I had a lot of pressure on the last session, but finally, despite bad conditions, I sent it at my 4th go of the 8th session… Incredible feeling to send at the last moment! Last day, best day as the English say!”
