Simon Lozenzi ouvre The Big Island assis ! – Simon Lorenzi FAs The Big Island sit!

  • 09/02/2021

The Fontainebleau woods are abuzz! Belgian climber Simon Lorenzi had made it a project this Fall after repeating ‘The Big Island’, and now the wait is over: Simon has topped out one of Font’s most coveted extreme lines, ‘The Big Island sit’ in Coquibus Rumont. He is taking his time to propose a grade for this first ascent, but it could be up to 9A.

The Big Island, a typical Font compression roof, was first ascended 10 years ago by Vincent Pochon. Since then, some of the best boulderers in the world have cleaned the holds and worked on the sit start, unearthing an estimated 8B just to link with the stand start. Jimmy Webb had made it one of his projects in the winter of 2017 and was planning on coming back, but the weather was not on his side. Since last year, local climbers Nico Pelorson and Camille Coudert have invested time and effort in it, even finding a clever kneebar in the sit start, but falling off, exhausted, in “The Big Island”. Same again this autumn, but with a new challenger in the mix: Simon Lorenzi, who had sent the stand start version last October with an unusual beta, as told us Lucien Martinez in a recent interview.

In the last few days, the friendly competition had intensified with several new highpoints, and finally it is Simon who has bagged the first ascent of the boulder yesterday. Stay tuned, as more could follow… Simon’s trip to Font and battle against this iconic boulder has been filmed by Gilles Charlier, a movie should be out in the near future…

If Simon proposes 9A for “The Big Island sit”, it will be the hardest boulder in Fontainebleau. Charles Albert’s “No Kpote Only”, announced 9A, has been downgraded by Ryohei Kameyama and Nico Pelorson. If this illustrious grade is announced, Lorenzi’s “Big Island sit” will become the second proposed 9A in the world, after Nalle’s still unrepeated “Burden of Dreams”.
