– Yosemite, what a year end with Zangerl and Larcher!

  • 10/12/2017

Each fall, the legendary walls of Yosemite Park in California see climbers from all over the world. While there is no attempt at the Grand Cap in the Dawn Wall this end of the year for much to the chagrin of followers of rockstars stories on Instagram, but several remarkable climbs have taken place in the valley, especially in the Nose:

  • After “Zodiac” last year and several weeks of work in the route and in particular in the last hard section 40m from the top, Barbara Zangerl and Jacopo Larcher just free climbed another hard bigwall with “Magic Mushroom” (31 pitches, 5.14a) one of the most difficult routes on the face of El Cap. The first free ascent of 2008 by Tommy Caldwell and Justen Song. The route offers varied and sustained difficulties with 3 key pitches (20? 22 and 27) around the 8b-8b +.The last diffuclt pitch (5.14.a – 8b+) has particulary been problematic for Barbara who send it on a knife edge after several falls at few  meters bellow the belay. This is the second free ascent of the route and the most difficult climb made free by a woman on El Cap! The couple will have put 11 days to reach the summit! Interview here.

  • Past week Hazel Findlay free climbed “Salathe Wall” (5.13b-35 pitches) after 4 days working the route from the top then 8 days in the wall with one day in a snowstorm! “Salathe Wall” was first freed in 1988 by Todd Skinner and Paul Piana, making it the first free ascent of a main route on El Cap. The first female ascent was realized by Steph Davis in 2005 and Hazel’s performance is the second British free ascent after James McHaffie in 2014.
