La Ligne Claire 8c+ pour Kathy Choong – La Ligne Claire 8c+ by Kathy Choong

  • 14/03/2021

A fan of extreme lines with great ticks like “Jungfrau marathon” 9a in Gimmelwald in 2019, Kathy Choong chose a new project over this winter. And when the Swiss athlete has a line in her sight, normally she only gives up when the chain is clipped. Kathy has done just that with “La Ligne Claire” 8c+ at the Praniania sector in St-Léger du Ventoux. Bolted by Franck Vilpini, this 30m-long route serves up a tough boulder crux to start with and continues on beautiful rock requiring good power endurance. It’s the fourth known female ascent of the line, after Florence Pinet, Nolwen Berthier and Julia Chanourdie. Here’s Kathy’s reaction.

“At the end of December 2020, after a poor showing at the European Championships, I was low physically and mentally, I was feeling exhausted on all fronts. So I looked for a route that’d give me pleasure and shape back. A hard one of course!
I’ve always loved St-Léger, and with the pandemic-related restrictions, France was the only foreign country I could travel to. After seeing the super inspiring video of Nolwen Berthier, I knew right then I’d work “La Ligne Claire”.

It starts with a well hard boulder (no idea of a grade, I never boulder outdoors) in which I fell for a long while before finding my own beta, with as a bonus a slightly scary shitty 3rd clip. Then there’s a rest, followed by a physical traverse where I was losing a fair bit of strength, my usual snail pace not being optimal there. A rest allows you to get your head back on and to stress ahead of the last crux, on small holds, 75% of the way up, before a last resistant fight where you can fall right under the chains. Without any expectations I started on this project thinking I’d never get a look-in, and that hard lines weren’t possible at that moment for me. But shape and psyche came back as I was making progress on the route.

In terms of number of sessions on it: far too many given my shape back then and the rather uncooperative weather, or the overly hot February days (we do like to find excuses, as always!). I’d say I spent about 28 days on it. I’m really lucky to have a flexible job and be able to work remotely during my rest days, it means that I was able to get a few days in March to finally send on the second day of my last trip. But I’ve so loved being in St-Léger, to get my sensations back, to trust again in my abilities and feel that ‘fight mode’ back on, that I’ve enjoyed every moment. Even when I fell right at the top 3 times! And that’s also thanks to the great people with whom I’ve shared these moments.
I’m super keen to try other hard routes, in St-Léger maybe or Mollans, and also to try some hard multipitch routes in the Gorges du Verdon and at home in Switzerland. I’m still a beginner when it comes to multipitching, but I’m totally psyched to find new challenges in that field.”
