Seconde ascension de ça chauffe 9a – Second ascent of ça Chauffe 9a

  • 04/02/2021

An experienced rock climber from Chambéry, France, Mathieu Bouyoud has just climbed the hardest route of the winter crag of Seynes with “Ça Chauffe” 9a. Young local Tanguy Mérard made the first ascent of this project with an insane bouldery section a year ago.

We asked Mathieu to tell us about the ascent:
“The route starts with a 6b+ first pitch. After the anchor you have 4 long moves on edges, then you arrive in the crux, with 2 razor sharp crimps and no feet… Given as a 7C+ boulder apparently… Hard to grade boulder cruxes on sports routes though. From the crimps you have to lock very on one of the ‘balls’ so typical of Seynes. After a good rest you finish with a power resistance 8b. Once you know what to do there, you normally can’t fall!

I worked the route over 5 weekends. You can’t have too many tries in a row because the crimps in the crux destroy your skin. The route has suited me as I haven’t been able to climb during the week for a year, focusing on the campus board instead. That was perfect for the route. I have the technique, and as for power endurance I try to use my experience to optimise my time on a climb. At any rate last Saturday was a magical moment, I was able to climb through the crux on my 3rd go of the day, and from then on I had to give it a good fight! It was close, but I got there in the end. For this year, no real plans due to the situation, but I would like to finish my project “Team Frissouille” in La Balme and maybe, if possible, try “Papichulo” again as I got very close last year.”
